Should we be issuing unsatisfactory EICR certificates with remedials quote?

The customer has paid for an EICR, so that's what I give them. I also give a quote for the remedials. On rare occasions, when it is a regular customer, or someone who has made it clear that they need a 'satisfactory' report, I will not bother filling out an unsatisfactory report, I just give the...

    Wiring for outbuildings or sheds

Do double check with the electrician that they are happy with you running the cable. It's just never as simple as it sounds. Correct depth, cable warning tape, plenty of excess left rather than exactly the right amount so no room for error/complications.. etc etc. These are things you may...

UK EICR – Are RCDs always required for a satisfactory report?

I personally err towards C2 when dealing with lack of 30ma RCD protection. Not in every case, but more often than not. Also, if you are registered with Napit, they have clear expectations of what codes should be given. I realise we don't have to agree with them, or even adhere to them, but if...

What is your hourly rate as a self employed electrician? (2024-25)

    Well, I don't think we'll get too many more votes so time for the results... 2022 - 2023 = £41.48 2023 - 2024 = £46.30 and the results for 2024 - 2025 = £45.70 p/hour (mean average hourly rate) - population 58

    New fusebox F30xxMZ range

'Fusebox' is the brand name of the product. Whilst you are not wrong to call it a distribution board, a more accurate terminology (in this case as we are dealing with a domestic range of DB's) would be consumer unit. However, it is a 'fusebox' consumer unit. Fusebox have started fitting an SPD...

Does this immersion require an RCD?

Thanks LS. They have agreed to have a new CU, so that's good. I made it clear it was just a good idea and not mandatory, but they are a sensible family and would like the CU upgrade.

Does this immersion require an RCD?

My customer has had a new Immersion fitted (see picture). It is a Gledhill Stainless Lite Plus. Is has dual elements The plumber has wired in one of the elements. It does not work. It does not have RCD protection. My question is, does this immersion require an RCD? My research indicates that...

How to get contracts and work for a newly qualified electrician

You simply have to start off slowly. I too used rated people to begin with. I found them satisfactory, not great, not bad, but it did get me work. I also tried advertising in different forms. I found the local newspaper worked well. Overtime, you start making some contacts. Builders are good...

    Van recommendations please

Just be aware that you are likely going to be paying 50% for diesel, as the mpg will bve significantly more (probably). My renault trafic (which I loved, and hardly ever went wrong, but I did look after it) did around 27mpg (combined). My Citreon Berlingo (LWB) does 42mpg (combined). I realise...

Bathroom light switch, is a 45A shower switch, wired strangely.

Impossible to say, as I didn't remove the light. All I can say is that the CPC was not working in the switch. The cable could have gone to a junction box which had a working earth and then to the light, so the light may have been earthed (but probably wasn't).

Bathroom light switch, is a 45A shower switch, wired strangely.

I didn't get around to looking at the wiring for the light... There was definitely a CPC in the switch, but it had something like 50V to line, so likely no continuity of CPC. She's not going to get any of the work done though. She just can't face any disruption whilst her husband is ill (very...
