    UK Ceiling Lights and Speakers

If you look at the nice pictures of the product, it tells you what you need! It says that you need a 3amp fused connection unit and connect that to the lighting circuit* So, buy from Screwfix, or whoever, a fused connection unit, a patress box to mount it on and some 1mm twin and earth cable...

    Gym treadmill likely load

Yes, but the clamp probably wont tell you the surge, only the running current.

    LED strip ceiling lights

Agreed. I bought three 5 metre LED strips to run from a USB supply. The spec said you could have 4 strips connected together. First strip fine, next strip dimmer third strip dimmer still. Solved it by effectively wiring the strips up as a ring (end strip cabled back to power source.)

    Gym treadmill likely load

Although its a C curve RCBO, I'll bet it is start up surge that is tripping it. As far as I read it, you have three treadmills and a stairclimber running from one 16A RCBO? Probably when one or two machines are running, then the start-up surge for another will trip it. Run a nice, new 4mm 32A...

Downlight ID -- advice needed !

Oh yes. They are called integrated fittings and they are just fine until they fail. Then you go back to the maker (perhaps under warranty) and ask for a replacement. They then tell you that model is obsolete and has been replaced by a new one (often not the same spec, or look). I stopped...

Can my step-up/down transformer be repaired?

What did it blow? RCD, MCB, fuse? What electrical test equipment do you have?

Bathroom refit, do I need a RCD?

A single layer of standard Gypsum plasterboard has no specific fire-resistance. Your ceiling is probably one of the Fireline products - these are 15mm and covered with pink, not brown paper.

Bathroom refit, do I need a RCD?

Another thought. In a building such as yours, each flat is its own fire compartment. This means that surfaces like ceilings are specified and installed as fire barriers. Turning a fire barrier into something resembling swiss cheese to fit a few downlights need special consideration. You...

    Sockets on a lighting circuit - C3 or C2?

Only a few years ago this was the way we did things. Surely a properly fused plug and socket isn’t a life-threatening device?!

    Sockets on a lighting circuit - C3 or C2?

The fact is that BS7671 lists a number of items that shall be connected to a lighting circuit. Can't remember exactly the reg, somewhere around 559.6 maybe.... The items include socket-outlets to BS1363-2, FCUs and other things. So it is specifically permitted. Absolutely it carries NO...

Kitchen Lights - adding a dimmer

The type of dimmer will depend on the type(s) of light that you have. Some lights (eg fluorescent) cannot be dimmed.
