Finished 1st fix on big old house, just been told by spread,it's lime & plaster on walls to match original,ok no probs, mentioned that the metal sheathing may have to come off & be replaced with plastic sheathing. The plaster reacts with the galv sheathing, some of the orig sheathing,is ok ,so doubt what's he's saying really, what's your input on this.

My input would be "I need an order from the customer for above and beyond agreed works" you didn't know what type of plaster was going on and if you did you were not warned. It must be an extra, I would suggest you do not do anything without an agreed cost for the extra work.

Yeah definite extra, but would it really be necessary, quite a bit of work, that I really don't wont to be doing at this stage, cheers
I have no idea whether the Plaster will react with the sheathing, If I were you I would forget about it unless the customer asks you to change it all, just totally forget all about it and start getting your materials up together for the 2nd fix, that is what I would do.

Yes thats a good point Colshaws, I am pretty sure I have seen lime on walls in old cottages before and I have never heard a plasterer say there was a problem with metal boxes or sheathing.

bloody stupid, IMO. seen caping that's been under lime plaster for close on 100 years. still as good as new.

What is the plasterers' concern, is it that such a reaction will show through the plaster work in time to come, or that the protection of the capping will fail?
If the latter, then no worries as its only there to protect the cabling during plastering.
If the former, I wonder if there is an easier solution of spraying the capping with some sort of protective film?
However, as Telectrix has said. I have never come across this scenario before.
