Had a job at my local chippy today. The job required the main fluorescent sign switching taken off a timer and the switch moved back into the main shop area. There is also a seperate double flourescent light above the main sign. The wiring is messy but the lighting is a seperate circuit coming off a 20 amp fuse in 2.5mm cable! Junction boxed the power feed and the 2 lighting cables with a switched cable running through to a 5 amp fused switch. Then found out the hard way that the neon light on the fused switch, that he so desperately wants, will not work with a live/switched live single cable. What does anyone recommend as the quickest way around this problem!

Just throwing this in......so don't slam and dunk me!

Aren't Neon signs supposed to have a firemans switch connected to them??

Is the Neon signage more than 100W?

Found this:

Where any circuit operates at a p.d. (potential difference) exceeding low voltage a fireman's emergency switch must be provided. Such installations usually take the form of discharge lighting (neon signs), and this requirement applies for all external systems as well as internal signs which operate unattended. The purpose is to ensure the safety of fire fighters who may, if a higher voltage system is still energised, receive dangerous shocks when they play a water jet onto it. The fireman's switch is not required for portable signs consuming 100 W or less which are supplied via an easily accessible plug and socket.

Sorry guys i am confusing everyone. The light isn't neon. I am talking about the indicator light on the fused switch. What i am needing advice on is the easiest way to make this indicator light of the fused switch work with a single switched live cable going straight in and out of the live feed and live load side of the switch?. Is it best to take the live feed out of the junction box extend it straight into the feed of the fused switch and then re-arrange the load to the 2 flourescent lights?

You are talking about a fused connection unit (FCU) and that requires LN&E for both the supply and the load. The neon you are talking about will only work if the L&N are connected because the neon is bridged between the two.

It is use for complete (local) isolation of the supply to which every 'load' it is feeding, therefore the neutral is required.

Are you just looking for a switch?

Yes! In my naivity i have not yet seen a single pole switch with indicator lamp. Presumably this exists!
