If you're a qualified, trainee, or retired electrician - Which country is it that your work will be / is / was aimed at?
United Kingdom
What type of forum member are you?
Practising Electrician (Qualified - Domestic or Commercial etc)
There's so many threads running on here about how everyone is quiet, and it's all getting a bit depressed.... I for one have also felt the diary start to acquire mothballs so I'm starting to return to my former life and getting back on the rock and roll wagon. Well, these days it's more corporate events than dirty groupies, but the affect on my wallet is the same. It's not what I ever imagined happening, and only (hopefully!) until the world regains its brain's, as I don't want to end up being months away from home anymore, getting old(!), but as I've just posted on another thread - make hay whilst the sunshines!

Are any of you other lads going back to other skills just to make ends meet?

Chris.

While it's not exactly diversifying, I'm going to make use of the slack time to start the HND. Hopefully once on it I can get away to sunnier climes and a fat pay cheque

Trev, funny you should say that as I've been thinking about doing exactly the same! Thing is, we're not exactly swamped with FE colleges down in the Levels, so I've also kind of put off discovering exactly HOW long and much hassle it would take. Let me know what you find?

Don't have much to fall back on but fortunately booked until at least Christmas! Seriously thinking about going back to Oz as Mrs very homesick!

Not very many jobs going where you can utilise your skills as a tank crewman :( I guess 60 tonne war machines aren't used that often in private industry :D

Still on the doors tho every once in a while to earn my pocket money.

One of the main reasons I became an electician, was to someday, move to Oz. Its been a dream of mine for years. I was just about to start the process a few months ago, when the wife was laid off and my work went quiet. So its on hold for a few years now. If I was you, I would get your sen back there mate. Got to be better than here at the minute.

Jay

Teesside university have an open learning unit mate, I think that's where Lenny is doing his and where I'll be getting mine too. Iirc the units are about 3 months a pop and £200 but if you're slack you may qualify for a tuition fee student loan

With this weather it is becoming a dream of mine also....

One of my sparky mates moved out to Perth last October, just landed himself a job on the mines - texted me his first payslip the other day $5000 nett for a week !!! (76 hour/ 7days)

I've got old - and tired - can't be doing 18 hour days for weeks on end anymore.

It was fun while it lasted though.

Well, a complete bolt from the blue... an hour ago I was all set to go and spend tomorrow and Thursday rigging up some CCTV... one phone call from an old rock and roll client later, and I'm now off to Doha tomorrow, for 1 days work (billing for 2), back Friday. So the CCTV gets done on the weekend instead (fine with original client) and I at least get to be reminded of what the sun looks like. Oh, and I'm now owed one seriously big favour for getting a mate out of the cack!

After 6 months of trying to become established and delving into savings to survive I feel like a failure, the phones stopped ringing and these threads are painting a gloomy picture, my saving grace is that some CIS work has turned up, so am back as a site monkey.

I just spent £300 on a quarter page Ad in a local business directory too a monthly publication called the local directory, gets delivered to 11,500 homes in my area, Ad ran in June and July issues and so far not a dickie bird from it, not one call out of 11500 homes, depressed, can't afford to run it again, it obviously didn't work that well!!!, by the amount of other trades ads in there too tells a story, the fact that more peeps are advertising rather than getting word of mouth trade

Jase, we've all been there, and many (like me) still are. It's not that nobody wants you, it's just that nobody can afford US, full stop. I've got a little 1/8 ad that runs in a local glossy, costs me £35 a month and the last two months it hasn't paid for itself. Thankfully other stuff has, but it's definitely tough out there and all these f'ing Electrical Trainee's sold the £50k lie aren't helping as they're getting 'qualified' then doing all the jobs on the cheap in desperation and disbelief. There's nowt wrong with doing anything you can in order to pay the bills - it's why I'm off at the drop of a hat tomorrow because it's an easy few hundred quid (that, and I have a very understanding Mrs Rockingit). All big businesses do what they can in hard times, no shame in following suit.

Ouch, I have just signed up for a similar torture.

I know it will be fruitless, but I feel I have to at least try to get business.
