It's probably for lots of reasons... but I know that tracking owners for stolen property is a very time consuming process. I heard of a discovery of several hundred stolen bicycles... many with serial numbers and security marking alegedly to enable tracing if stolen... Luckily one of the coppers took it upon himself to trace the owners... but it was like 2 a week he could shift ! I think in the end they mostly went to auction. The police station yard was full of 'em !!

I was was working in Wandsworth some years ago and there was a big police auction place where you could view and place sealed bids on loads of stolen goods from bikes, TVs , antiques , to power tools , to aftervshaves / perfumes , to mobile phones and electrical goods cds DVDs etc etc
you name it it was for sale.
Some of the stuff was quite interesting but showed how much was being nicked and never made its way back to the original owners

Agreed... theft is rife in this country... and the police generally turn a blind eye to it ! They have to focus their attention on 'hate crimes' where a transgender person has been called 'he' when 'it' wants to be called 'she' !!

This is completely untrue. Don't be swayed by facebook type comments or what the bloke down the pub says. You would be amazed how much work goes into fighting 'proper' crime, including a lot of pro-active stuff.

If your local force has them, sign up to their update emails and follow their facebook pages. You'll probably be quite surprised by how many get arrested. You'll also be disappointed by the dismal sentences given by the courts! Which is why they end up out and about nicking again.

I think the rozzers di take theft seriously but getting the nicked gear back is virtu impossible

Absolutely. The amount of stuff they recover it would probably be impossible to re-unite it all with the original owners, even if it was well marked. And let's face it, the thieves will have ground any markings off after they nicked it.

But with an up and over door everything will fall out of the trays attached to it, you have to think these things through. ?

Yeah... I know it's not all bad... but I have family that are in the police, so I hear all sorts of stories about what really goes on. Modern policing is driven by targets and 'detections'. If you have a theft and this month there's a target for thefts... yours will be investigated, if not, sorry mate, but we're too busy...

And I agree on the courts... ridiculously lenient sentences even for the 80th time he's been in court !

Ah yeah... the multi-use thing does make it tricky... I have similar issues. I could do with Thunderbird 2 with the interchangeable modules !
I’m sort of thinking that way, if I could design something that rolls out of the back of the van and onto another rack in the garage at the same height ....or just get another van for hobbies ?
