its all about red tape and jobsworths now.......if you built a bike (or even rebuilt I suppose) then you would have to go through vehicle type approvals, road safety classification tests, a special MOT (with customary multiple failures and resubmissions due to "emissions").....all probably adding up to about £3000, problems registering it with the DVLA, massive insurance prices or declined insurance and finally the Plod following and pestering you..........then somebody would see a shiny bike parked up and either (A) kick it over or(B) steal it and it would either be stripped or sent off abroad before you knew it was gone.......it's sad how the world has turned out these days.....

I've recently built my own workshop, i've got welding gear, compressor, tools for everything and i love messing about with engines and fabricating stuff, me and a few mates want to build bar stool racers, they look so funny

The MSVA only costs about £80, and is nothing more than a stricter MOT.
A lot less hassle than I was led to believe.
I live in East London, so used the Chelmsford DVLA office, but had to use the Watford MSVA center.
Rode through London from home to Watford, then round the M25 to Chelmsford then back to East London, without a No. plate.
Didn't get stopped once, although at one time on the M25, I did notice some blue flashing lights in my mirrors.
The Q plate added another £100 to the £300 for the bike in my avatar, total of £400 for the two Harleys fully comp and business use.
Didn't get the one in my avatar registered, just used an 84 plate off of the doner bike.
Keep meaning to try and get it registered as a new vehicle, just never get round to it.
Only ever use it accasionally during the summer.
