Can anyone recommend a decent one of these? I've had a couple in the past which were ok for detecting cables but when set to detect joists and beams were pretty rubbish, just picked up off the wall/ceiling as soon as they went near it. I basically want one for when I'm fitting downlights to make sure I'm not gonna hit a joist. Cheers

Over the years I have had several of these things, the current one being the Bosch mentioned above. With foil backed plasterboard none of them work. The thing I rely on the most is a set of small magnets (ebay). A big one to find the nails/screws and a load of small ones to stick to them to show the layout of studs/joists. They work every time!
