What a nightmare..... covered carpet up with my dust sheet (should have used my roll of carpet protector!)

Only had to take out 3 x old R60 eyeball lamps.

I've ended up somehow getting a nice little grey smudge right in the middle of the customers cream carpet - great !!

Rang up local carpet cleaner chap, he reckons that it might not even come out. Lucky I've got some liability insurance.

:stupid:

You can hire them mate, it's got to be worth a go before getting the insurers involved and it'll probably make you look good in the clients eyes

are you sure the mark wasn't there before. have had that scam pulled on me before now.

One job I was on the plasterer broke the toilet cistern, said to the client I'll try fixing it with silicone and if that doesn't work I'll get on to my insurers. Needless to say the silicone fix was a fail of biblical proportions:)

Doing a PIR in docklands, cream carpet.. sat on floor and started wrighting the cert out, only to see a chunk of chewing gum on the imaculate carpet!!!!
My heart sank as I was only there because the tennant had complained about the other sparks that had never sorted anything out.... lucky she was on the phone talking to a friend,, I sat there pulled, choped, wiped as best I could.. that was about a month ago, not heard anything so can breath a sigh of relife..but crap does happen, and it really does stress me out.. hopefully sythal they can clean it... at least you had dustsheets, so at least you tryed.

I find, when trying to pull a stubborn downlighter out of a newly painted ceiling, no matter how well I wash my hands beforehand, I always leave finger prints, and when i try and clean them off, it just makes them worse. Also my bloody spirit level leaves marks on the wall every time I use it. Aaaarrgh

Had a bloke try it with me once rang the boss and said I had burned a hole in landing carpet with drill bit and wanted £400 for replacement, boss was going to pay up and stop it out of my wages, until I showed him my dust sheet with no burn hole in it customer had also put dust sheets down before I arrived.Turns out previous spark had burned carpet and paid out so he thought he would have a small job done by a different firm and get more cash for his carpet, thank god I had just used a new sheet that day.

I was working in a block of converted flats. Covered everything I could and started drilling. A small bit of red brick dust got onto the sofa and woman went nuts and said I had to buy her a new sofa. I pointed out that I would be le to get the stain out but I couldnt do anything about the 20 odd smoke burns on it or the coffee stains. She said and I quote " but they are my damage, this is yours" Needless to say shes still sitting on the old one as far as i know.

Had a council tenant once accuse me of destroying her brand spanking new (yeah right) microwave because the "New electricity" I'd installed caused a surge. Funny how her TV, sky box, computers etc were not damaged.
She got a solicitor involved and even funnier was the fact that he used the term "New electricity"

Exactly Edd,I got called to a friends house yesterday,a young carpet fitter had caught an alarm cable and was going frantic in case he got sacked, anyway sorted it out and just told him to be a bit more carefull in future.I think when you are in the trade you realise accidents can happen to the best of us and if it can be sorted easily why cause problems for someone? didn,t bother charging as it was only a 5 minute job and I think he will remember next time.

Had to alter some wiring in a bungalow in which lived a man on the sick with amongst other things obsessive cleanliness and tidyness disorder.
Everything was white and spotless, no ornaments, no furniture except the essentials, only one plate, cup set of cutlery etc.
Hated working there.

Drilled through form outside once into what should have been the loft.... Didn't take into account the 12 ft ceiling in this lovely Victorian house, could not find the cable I'd pushed through....Till I checked in the bedroom, I'd drilled straight through some original 12inch cornice... bit of plaster covered it up, never said a word. Had lots of repeat custom from them too! So Lucky.

Doing a photographic job in a rented studio I had a mishap when part of the set collapsed and damaged one of the studio lights. Gave my insurance details to the studio owner and contacted the company the next morning. A couple of weeks later I got a phone call from the company saying there was a discrepancy between his statement and mine. According to him I’d wrecked 3 lights! Towards the end of the conversation I was asked would I object to going to court if needed.

End result, he got fined for insurance fraud, got no compensation for the damaged light. It was the third time he’d tried it.

My insurance premium actually went down the next year and I got paid my expenses.

A trick I was shown many years ago for white ceilings is to carry a piece of blackboard chalk and use it on any fingerprints you leave. If you have an old fashioned chalk-line then that powder is even better. If the ceiling is dull-white you can get it pretty close by thinning the chalk you've applied with a clean paper napkin or piece of (unused) toilet paper. It works on white carpets as well but obviously only long enough to cast some doubt on whether it was you that did it :)

my old firm was working on a council estate once and had 20 claims for 40" plasma,s bosses were going to replace them all untill I asked the obvious question, where are the damaged ones? turned out a lad had got 1 out of a skip and tried it on so our firm gave him a new one he then gave the old one to a friend who waited till we had worked at his house and then claimed for tv and on it went pass the tv,surprisingly when asked for old tv,s there was only one who could produce one,and would you believe it it was the same make as the first.Scam stopped only 1 tv bought and yes you guessed it I didn,t get a bonus for saving cost of 19 tv,s that our firm never broke.

Was this on the Race Course estate in Gateshead Phil? Exactly the same thing happened there

Quite a while ago, working in a private old people's nursing home, there was an accident resulting in the death of a resident a few weeks after the job had been completed. An accusation was made saying that carpets and floorboards hadn't been refitted correctly, resulting in the fatality. On inspection, it was discovered that no work had been carried out anywhere near the area in question. The lengths they will go to ' to get something out of it' can leave a very sour taste in the mouth.

A mail order company I was working for had a return of a settee that the purchaser did not like, quite common which is why their prices were high. The returned settee was obviously second hand and of a make not supplied by the company. They sent out an investigator who talked his way into the house and he was offered a cup of tea. While the house owner was making a cup of tea he looked at the settee he was sitting on. It was the mail order company make and the same model they had sent out and obviously brand new. The house owner tried to talk his way out of it with all sort of excuses about he had got it off a friend, the second hand one had been supplied which is why he sent it back etc but ended up paying. Some people will try anything.

Just did a job in an old village hall where I was up and down into the attic (filthy) pulling cables through. Left dirty marks everywhere I touched, I said no problem I would wash them off when I finished. Was told not to bother they needed to decorate and this would be the incentive. So it can work both ways.

White spirit is a very good carpet cleaner and will clean most things off carpets, just do a test area out of sight first.

No Trev one in Heald Green near Stockport Manchester.
Chatsworth estate?

What kind of halfwit would actually fall for this?
Was it that new electricity again? it seems to be especially dangerous on council estates... I dont do council work and only ever run the safe, old type of electricity that doesn't damage peoples plasma TV's to my new sockets, cant say I've ever had a complaint...

Marvo, how un PC to say Blackboard, I'm getting in all kinds of trouble on another post. Funny Pic btw!
I'm not sure if you're joking or not Kiers. Is black board really not used anymore? What else could you call it, it's a board and it's black? If it's un-PC please forgive me, the phrase is still widely used in Africa which is kinda ironic.

I have to say that baby wipes are the most effective way of cleaning just about anything - what on earth do they put in them?
I'm guessing the use mothers spit, it's just a more polite way of dispensing it when you're in public. :)

They're now called chalkboards in the UK courtesy of the wonderful PC brigade.
It's a board and it's black though.
Oh dear I can feel a rant coming on, I'd best go lie down

Sounds a bit...well...pointless, I've never heard of a 'chalk board' getting offended. You'll have to bear with me, this PC stuff is way too complicated for me I fear, if I can remember I'll try avoid using the word black in future.

Get the dust sheets with the plastic backing, they're a god send

I had a rewire last year where the woman claimed the 18yr old sons laptop screen had been cracked by us. There was just no way I could see it could have happened, nor could my mate on that job, and we put it down to her slob of a teenage son having knackered it himself and trying to pass the buck on to us. He'd probably piled too many dirty plates on top of it under his bed.
