Hello everyone, sorry I havent been a productive member of the forum for a while.
I have had a new customer ask me to fit a magnetic door release system. The thing I cant seem to find out is in the event of power failure do they release or stay locked? Any help greatly appreciated.

Paul

Consider a power failure in a fire ...?

You need to find out if this is a Fire exit or route , normally all door should auto close if fire alarm goes off(if held open), you may require a power supply with battery back up, and linking to the fire system may be needed ....

Is it a speaker entry/buzzer entry system like on school receptions or an exit locked with release pad... ope you are getting the picture we lack so much info.

sorry my bad. Its an internal door in a school. not a fire door although it is signed as a fire escape. always closed. The origional installer wired a push button release under reception desk. They want a high level push release button (to stop small hands) and to remove the door handle people usually use to get out. I hope this is enough detail for you.

In most cases of your kind the circuit is required to release in fire so doors can be used but remain closed not held, local chat with fire service or local council may give special requirements for certain regions, i did a system that had to remain locked closed in a fire and only operated by staff as it was a high section mental ward the the risk to public out-weighed the safety of the residents as they were dangerous people, but the evacuation systems was so designed to give minimal risk to them...

Also a green release break glass may be required as a double redundency option.

I think all magnetic doors must have green break glass inches of emergency, we had them installed in a hospital I worked in and they did not release during a fire alarm only if they smashed the green break glass

Darkwood has explained this quite smiply....Fire doors release in the event of a fire condition...any other event to release or lock will need to be advised in a full risk assement.

sounds like a primary school to me.

Have they done a fire and security strategy risk assessment, for that door, or building.

I know the strategy sounds arsey but if they done one then theres your guidline

Ill hazard a guess to what smiply means lol ... but yes your right but he has to be cautious as i said as different councils will require different requirements ...its all good saying make it smiply but if a little un dies in a fire the escape system is gonna get scrutinised so always best to liase with governing bodies.

be all and end all Darkwood, make sure all requirements requested are down on paper
Had a few extremes from one to the other.
Nursing homes were break glass door release were requested at high level, to stop patiants getting out, this being against DDA ruling, but assessed that this was acceptable if door release automatically on fire.
Then a bank assessed, security was the prime and doors not released on fire, incase of deliberate false activation to gain access, but green door releases must be in place.

Yes tend to agree but just need to be careful of the authority of whos asking whether it be in writing or not .... your in a position to correct those that think they are pulling the strings if in fact they are calling the shots above their station, i had a head master over-ruled by regional clark of works because i challanged his authority.... but he was a ----- and thought what he says goes....
