can any one give me some advice about motorized gates is there an average current rating
as i have been asked to supply a motorized gate that no one has seen or even chosen and chances are there will be drive way lighting. at the moment i am calculating 20A over 600m which works out at 50.00mm 3core swa but if loading no were near this a smaller cable can be used
assuming most gates are screw type wich are efficiant.
also as load not constant i would say 35.00mm will work as no heat will build up for 2 or 3 mins it will be in use

Surely the best thing to do is tell the client that you are unable to work out the circuit design until you have a firm spec on the gate?

It sounds to me that there are too many variables to guess at this stage.

ive only ever fitted one electric gate and it was a few years ago, im sure it was around 700 watts.

Maybe best to have a rummage around the net at some suppliers websites and see what general ratings are.

At least that would give you an idea until you get the spec from the client.

I haven't done the calculations but just looking at your results,it looks like massive overkill.but I'm guessing this was done on a software program, and maybe ambient temperature could be adjusted to help bring down volage drop? Gates I've worked on were low voltage, with a battery back up,but I think only a 5amp supply was needed.I don't suppose the gate is near an electric pole? and you could maybe get a new meter/supply put in.
you could also make it TT and then you could use 2core(a lot cheaper on a 600meter run)
