So im up in new zealand, doing what i do, (but with sun and nice views and bad pay), doing a small site of a few new offices, anyhoo been cutting in downlighters off a spec sheet without seeing the fittings. (not by choice) Anyhoo fittings turns up, and upon double checking the cutout sizes, there all spot on..whoo!, Start to fit em, and on closer inspection it turns out my 100mm hole saw is actually 111mm. ah ****ting ****.

Its OK tho, ive only cut 35 of the ****ers, and its not like the hand over is Friday. :|

beer time.

Op knew the holesize, just had wrong size cutter. Sometimes you dont have time to wait fir the fittings to be delivered just ask for spec sheet and carry on as OP has done.

IMO though on a tight schedule job I wouldn't be cutting the holes out until the down lights were on site. There could be stock issues etc so the client might have to source an alternative thats a different diameter.

Maybe, alot of ifs and buts though. Unfortunatly the real world and perfect world are two completely different places.

I feel your pain SparkyJoe. Where in NZ are you?

We did similar on a big job, lighting designer gave us the spec of the lights, so I sent 2 lads off measuring up and cutting holes. Told them twice to check the holesaw, as some lights were 70mm and others were 86mm cut out.

About an hour or so later, one of the lads came back to me and said cut all the kitchen and utility, I thought good job, lets check it out. Only gone and cut 45 holes in 86mm when should have been 70mm. My fault for not checking.

The best thing was though, we managed to convince the lighting designer to change the lights to the 86mm ones, citing the ceiling void as not being deep enough for the lights she had spec'd (120mm ceiling void when the 70mm lights required 150mm void)....got very lucky with that one!

Im staying in wellington, Wholesalers had some plates that fit in them nicely, which was lucky, smashed some 13/14 hour days in and got it finished, but now im on holiday as ive worked too many hours this week (75 :/) lol

really need to get a licence so i can make some money out of my skillz

Could I suggest you buy one of these? They’re not expensive.

It was the only picture I could find in a hurry. I could have posted a steel rule but that wouldn’t be safe for an electrician.

what's wrong with this? used for measuring cable runs for decades. :

Its a good job I'm not an electrician then, I've got three in the van, and a steel set-square, bevel, combi square, framing square.

There’s three steel rules in my kit and a chain surveyors measure. I could have some fun with that around live gear.

My adjustable square/mitre is definitely steel, I made it myself at engineering college as an apprentice.

These were things that were popular for Apprentices to make - along with Vee Blocks, Scribing Blocks, Cold Chisels & Screwdrivers.

I had a nice little sideline when I was a Training Instructor getting the apprentices to churn these out as "Training Exercises" for my P.A. Hire business - as well as flogging to any Tom Dick or Harriet who wanted one.
