hi all ,as recently finding out that you can claim tax relief ON PAYE for laundry cost's can you do the same for tools as over on HRMC website it says you can here HM Revenue & Customs: Tax relief for specialist tools or clothing but this table EIM32712 - Other expenses: flat rate expenses: table of agreed amounts for 2004/05 onwards seems to suggest only laundry is available for electricians on PAYE AS I claim for laundry already can I make a claim for Tool Allowance if so how do I go about this ,thankyou:wink_smile:

You can set off the costs of tools. Strictly speaking and especially if they are expensive they will probably have to be treated as a capital item. Are you working on a self employed basis, through your own limited co or as an employee?

Yes you can claim. You have to write them a letter, and depending on the value you are trying to claim they respond appropriately. Call HMRC for advice, I did.

I am an employee with a small company and i paid over £400 few years back for my combi drill i use for work. I've been told by a few ppl that i should have claimed and often wonder how many years you can go back. Would i have been entitled to owt does anyone know?

if you had claimed for that drill, hmrc would have given you about £80 back.

It aint that funny like. For folk who work for a decent outfit who provide you with all the appropriate gear then they're the lucky ones. However like myself, i'm expected to carry out jobs quickly, safely and efficiently with 2nd hand crap. I bought it to help myself carry out work better. Like i say i've explained this to quite a few ppl. I have never owned my own business but ppl have often said i had grounds to apply but i never bothered coz i didn't think i'd get anywhere with it.

Depends on the value, I got the impression if it was say regularly 100 quid over the year then they would adjust your tax code so that u got the money back by paying less tax. If it was bigger values they would send you self assessment return (you don't need to be self employed to do self assessment any one can opt for it).

Also your employer can have an arrangement with HMRC which means you pay less tax to make up for replacing tools.

You should note that, this only applies to maintenance of tools and replacing broken tools. You are not MEANT to claim for purchasing new tools which are not a replacement. For example an apprentice couldn't claim for all there tools they buy in year one.

Check out HMRC website there Is a whole manual on it, quite straight forward. They told me I had to write a letter to them at end of tax year. Ie now !

You'd get more tax relief if you buy your employer's materials for him, you people are ruining this trade by buying drills, steps, pipe vices, it'll be using your own van without expenses next lol

In these times i'm lucky to be in a job. I'm looking all the time to work for a bigger company, i've been sending my feelers out for over a yr and nothing! I'm just plodding on week by week. All i wanted to know was can i claim and how far back can you go???

You've got about 5 years to claim I believe if you have never done a self assessment tax return, if it is a small amount then you can just phone them and they'll send you the appropriate forms. It has been a while since I've been employed though so I'm not 100% on this but you obviously already had these tools in your possession but in the course of doing your job they have worn out or broken and so you have had to buy replacements (for which you'll need to keep your receipts).
