opinions here please. have a customer who i have done some remedial works for. situation is this:

house is split level. house built above garage with 40 steps up. CU is in garage. customer has a tripping problem and wants me to solve it. the problem is that he wants me to remove shoes when in the house in case i put a bit of dirt on his carpets ( H&S conflict...shoes protect feet from injury). he also has 4 cats with litter trays stinking the house out, precluding me from being able to breathe in certain areas even after a dose of anti histamines. anyone ever had this scenario ?

Shoes also insulate so I'd be very hesitant to do electrical work bare foot or even just in socks. Don't you get shoe dust covers? Safety-Shoe-Cover-150x150.jpg

As for the cat litter trays I'd just tell him they stink and please move them outside.

Similar.

It was 4 stinking dogs and a partially dressed 2 year old girl literally peeing & crapping all over the carpets while the "lady" of the house still in her nightwear in the middle of the afternoon lounged on the very soiled sofa chain smoking.

It wasn't a leccy job - it was a gas job - so I disconnected the meter, capped it off and walked out never to return.

I don’t really mind shoes off. Often take them off on my own when theres some nice floors and some finishing work to do (second fix, swapping lights etc).
Let my feet breathe after couple of hours in steelies.
And is often a must when going to Asian customers houses, a fair share of my jobs.

Had some work on council flats years ago, in couple of cases our boss had to refuse doing the work before a cleaning company/social services went in...
When its your own business theres always an option of walking off, its up to you if you don’t like something...

I like this option for the shoes.
Not sure how the customer will react to you telling him to move the litter trays outside. Worth a try though.

I carry a pair of "indoor only" house shoes (white trainers, with white soles), which I can change in & out of at the door.

it's all very well changing shoes at the door if you're going to be inside for a while, but when you're up and down, in and out, every few minutes ( from house to CU) not an option. tying and untying laces every 5 minutes, when do you get time to do any work? ans an asthma attack caused solely by cats is not a pleasant experience.

Use the shoe coveralls, don't take your shoes off under any circumstances, as for the cat litter tray tell them to remove them.

He stopped using shoe dust covers once ASDA started charging 5p each for them. :sailor:

At your age I would have thought you'd be wearing shoes with Velcro fasteners or carpet slippers.

get some slip on workboots then or reuseable overshoes.

they make ones you can clean now and reuse

i just claim some health and safety malarky if someone asks me to take my shoes off, im a bit OCD so unless its the kind old lady with the spotless house i never take em off. End of the day you their to earn money not faff about with your shoes id leave em on. I hate getting called to these council house faults were it looks like the inside of a war camp i mean they live like animals....
