Hi All,

can any one recomend a good manufacturer of soldering irons please.

I will very rarely use one, have been looking at the Weller Sp80L Soldering Iron 80W

thanks

Martin

If you are only going to be using one very occasionally then I would recommend just going for a cheap 25W soldering iron of any make, they are about £5 or less and if they fail then you can easily get another one, it does depend on the use to which they are put but almost any make will do the job on an occasional basis.

Hi Richard,

thanks for replying...

I was thinking of doing this but I have been bit in the arse before by getting cheap gear and it letting you down just when you need it..... But again the problem is I will only use it on the occasional basis.. So its catch 22.

thanks again.

Hi Lenny,

Like the idea of a gas one... do you know if the quality of this is decent?

I have an earlier model of the portasol.
Mine comes with 4 soldering tips, a knife tip and a mini blow lamp kit.
Got mine off the Snap On man.
Cheaper than RS.

I use Metcal solder stations in our workshop (the units we have are older models than the link shows). I hate gas and battery powered soldering irons although I have a weller battery iron for occasional use on site. The temp control on gas and battery irons is way too sloppy for my liking.

I find the temp control on the Portasol excellent.
Of course it does help haveing a range of different sive tips to choose from.
I mostly use mine for wiring up custom motorcycles, the conductors range between 0.25mm² to35mm² and most of them are tri-rated, so transmit heat very easily.

I bought the latest version from the MAC van the other week . Brilliant piece of kit , recommend it to anyone.
