Starting out help please

Hi Happy Friday

Before this year I was a happy amateur but a change of career beckons! I’ve studied and passed 2392, 2393, 2377 and 2382 18th Edition. I’m aiming to do small jobs, mainly Minor Works and some EIC stuff and potentially some small scale PAT testing (clients from my old life are asking!).

I’m looking at joining NAPIT so I can be a CPS. What else in your opinions do I need? Is NAPIT a good choice? What else do I need to consider?

Have really enjoyed re-training, but wouldn’t do “big” jobs just yet so I’m unlikely to be standing on any one’s toes!

I very much doubt those qualifications are sufficient to gain NAPIT membership. Do you really need to be a member to do minor works and PAT?

I believe it's quite a pathway to get registered by either Napit or NICEIC now.

so straight to the point these are the qualifications I did back in those times however, I did not do an nvq lvl 3 am2 an such because It was hard finding a apprenticeship or electrician or company to work for and it didn't help that I didn't have a car back then.

Thanks all so far.

As I say I’m just intending on this being a small part of my business/life. Adding a new socket etc but to issue a MWEIC I have to be a competent person…but how else do I become one if not by joining NAPIT who won’t want me until I’m competent….

Same for an EIC. Confused.

As I understand it, and forgive me if I’m wrong because Scotland is slightly different…. But CPS membership is only needed for works under local authority building control. Where the authority needs to be notified….. by the customer…. But can be done by the electrician IF a member of a CPS.

Small works that are non-notifiable can be done by anyone qualified, but still needs a test certificate, although the certificate can’t have any cps logo on it.


Problems arise where some document states things have to be installed by a “registered electrician” rather than a “qualified electrician”… so you’re led to believe you need to be a member of some cps just for changing a light fitting or something.

Looking at the qualifications you list I would suggest you have been badly advised or misled by someone prior to and / or during the training you have undertaken as non of those qualifications are core qualifications so without further studying I think you would be unlikely to meet the all schemes entry requirements.

In the last few years the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) has raised the entry level for Competent Persons Schemes (CPS) such as the NICEIC and NAPIT and details of the current qualifiction requirements can found at https://www.electricalcareers.co.uk...024/12/TESP-EAS-Qualifications-Guide-1024.pdf

Unfortunately I'm sorry to say I think you may have to reconsider your immediate plans and look to gain a electrical core qualification before looking to join a CPS

Why is it so hard to join these scemes nowadays, surely by making it this hard people starting out are going to choose a different trade, why spend years and thousands at college to become a sparky when you can be a joiner just by following someone round site and earn similar money.

Also I would imagine quite a lot of sparks are clued up money wise so will have private pensions and lots will probably retire in their 50's so the pool of NAPIT and NIC members must be on a downward trend meaning less and less money for them. no wonder the yearly rates are shooting up, but increasing the price on an ever shrinking pool of customers has never been a good idea.
