Hi all,

The company i work for have gained MCS Accreditaion through NIC. We have been surveying and pricing potetional projects whilst developing out marketing etc etc. When pricing projects we have been allowing for a structural engineer to provide the calcs required. In the mean time i have been speaking with structural engineers to find a suitable engineer/company to partner with. One question or issue that has come up is with existing trussed roofs and calculating there structural strengthed prior to the additional of teh array mainly their nail plates, as supposedly there are so many different nail plates, thicknesses, length of nails in the trusses, the joints used etc etc. and without knowing the exact nail plate, or truss manufacturer ive been told its impossible to asses the structrual integrity of the existing roof?

Can any one provide guidnace on this? Or how there engineers cater for this etc etc

Cheers Mike

Not too big on calcs, but trusses are over-engineered anyway (as is most modern structural specs)

The weak point is the nail plates.

An untested and un-calc-like thing to do is using 5mm x 35mm wood screws attach 5mm thick x 35mm wide steel over each nail plate (length can vary accordingly, but over-long is good)

5mm x 35mm steel with pre-drilled 6mm holes is readily avialable in the form of heavy-duty wall straps ... just cut to length!

Wouldn't mind knowing if a Structural Engineer could do the calcs for this.

Anybody?

cant find struc engineer who is interested! if we doubt roof strength we leave it alone or get someone in to strengthen it!how many roofs getting checked out at mo? very little in this rush!government has caused this and there will be a price !ie sub standard instals!
