Guys, a little advice please. I've been asked to supply both an hourly and daily rate for some suby work, but to include travel time within the rates. Is there a "norm" for costing travel time in such a situation e.g half of standard hourly rate?
They haven't given an indication of the likely geographical areas for any work, so I don't know how much of an issue its going to be. Advice/recomendations welcome!

you could go in at £1 /mile. that's 45p/mile to cover vehicle costs ( as allowed by HMRC ) and 55p/mile for your time. if you average 30 mph, that works out at £16.50/hour.

Hard to average 30mph in London, you'd probably earn 50p an hour

Tbh, I was struggling to know what to do! The 50% of hourly rate was a pitch in the dark; I hadn't thought about the actual cost of travel, but Tel's post highlighted that. I don't want to price myself out of the picture, nor do I want to be out of pocket. I genuinely don't know if there is an an accepted norm for calculating this, hence the question.

You could apply the claim rate for tax purposes but this would not normally cover the entire running cost of the vehicle unless you were doing a very large number of miles per year.
If you are travelling then you are not earning and this also should be taken into consideration, though I would not agree with those who charge their normal hourly rate for travel as the customer is not receiving their expertise at the time of travel.
I would say that half of your hourly rate may be considered appropriate.
I like the idea of charging by time for travel because of the above considerations of 3 miles in half an hour.
If you were to say specify £10 per hour then at say 60mph this would only be 16p/mile which would not really be enough, however your normal hourly rate should also cover some of the cost of incidental travel in general so might be enough.

I would charge 40 pence per mile, that is the accepted amount with most companies I have dealt with, regarding your rate, well only you know what you need to earn.

JIB have travelling times & travel allowances tables. You could consider using those.
