Are Quinetic still regarded as the best kinetic switches?

Hi Folks.Have always appreciated kinetic switches for their "get out of jail"value in problematic situations. They are a gift .However my preferred approach is to always use traditional hardwiring where possible.I am now for the first time obliged to carry out a rewire where all light switching...

    I.R. testing existing circuits

The accepted method of I.R. testing existing circuits has been to join L and N together and test to E, to protect against damaging any electronics that were inadvertently left in circuit. However ,with the increase of new types of circuits between L and E as a result of "intentional leakage"...

    IT configured back-up genny

Am installing a bqckup genny in a house with a TNCS supply. Its will be in use 6 to 8 hrs/year (average yearly DNO outages). My question revolves around the genny,s supply .I see more advantages for the homeowner in having an IT configured genny than a TNS configured genny. Am I missing something?

Earth rod for back up genny

Hi folks, installing back up gennys not my thing.Cant avoid this one though.Have looked through previous threads. Two things still not entirely clear for me are... 1) Are there any reasons why the homes existing earth electrode wont suffice? 2) If a separate rod is required ,what...

Shock from switch due to dampness

Does it happen?.Is it even possible.?.I ask the question because I have never experienced the issue professionally and have become increasingly convinced that with a standard plastic switch it is not even possible. The traditional reasoning behind mounting a light switch outside a bathroom is due...

    Ring circuits to be retired?

Could the 30% leakage requirement on rcd, s, combined with the inevitable increase in kitchen appliances with intentional leakage built in, force designers to replace rings with radial circuits?

Voltage on high res. extraneous part

During an FLI test recently on a high resistance extraneous part (several thousand ohm) I decided to test what voltage appeared on the metal while the test was been carried out.I used a Metrel M1 3000.I measured approx 40 volt. Its well over 20 years since I conducted a similar test and my...

    Extraneous part issue?

A customer rearranged some kitchen units, exposing a copper section of the main waterpipe. It's just over a foot long(rest of house is Qualpex). However it's unbondedI carried out an Fli test and it maxed out. I next carried out an IR test and got a, reading of 7000 ohms. A little high for a...

    3 Meter rule?

Should the 3 Meter electrical reg. be reconsidered.?? Surely its "un-electrical" to deem mechanical protection as a suitable substitute for proper electrical protection?

Earth leakage meter.. Do I really need one?

While waiting for a reasonably priced earth leakage clamp meter that will do both AC and DC leakage, I find myself asking the question which is the title of this post. And so tonight (been prompted by "Listers" Post) I thought "why not ask the forum? I have to date never not solved any faults to...

    36volt Bosch "professional"

Bought this recently from Screwfix.Battery operated. First impression when I used it was that it sounded a bit "tinney". I drilled a 22mm hole in a wall and could immediately feel the heat eminating from the motor. My existing 24 volt Bosch (battery operated) did this effortlessly (which I have...

    Intentional earth leakage

Just thinking out loud. IEL (intentional earth leakage) is already having a significant impact on domestic socket circuit design. It's impact is going to continue to increase as virtually every apiance incorporates electronics. RCBO populated DB, s will become increasing necessary to cope with...

Mixing TT and TNCS supply systems

Was informed of this incident last week. A row of period houses in an older part of the city. All on TT earthing. One gets rewired. TNCS is obligatory for all new installations. DNO suffers a neutral break close to the trafo. All 23 houses now divert their neutral current back through the...

    Battery Battery repair

A 24 volt Bosch (GBH) battery repair (which cost 90 euro) was returned to the company who "repaired" it 2 days later as it simply went flat after drilling 2 holes and refused to recharge. Have several that require repair and see the only viable option being to do it myself. Anyone here repaired...

    Surge Protection

A DNO supply fault this week resulted in damage to several electronic devices (audio equipment, chargers, appliances. USB ports sockets etc). My question relates to the best type of surge protection to negate the effects, not just of transient overvoltages, but of a prolonged overvoltage. It...

    Open PEN solution

How many threads have there not been regarding the issues resulting from employing a TNC-S supply system? The current earthing arrangements to mitigate the consequences of a broken DNO neutral are not satisfactory and are not likely to change in the foreseeable future largely due to cost. But...

    Shower shock in TT systems

Do you encounter many issues with homeowners experiencing "tingling" from electric showers in homes with a TT supply system? Reason I ask is because everytime we respond to this issue it always turns out to be a result of a plumber replacing copper with Qualpex or the service provider replacing...
