Does this immersion require an RCD?

My customer has had a new Immersion fitted (see picture). It is a Gledhill Stainless Lite Plus. Is has dual elements The plumber has wired in one of the elements. It does not work. It does not have RCD protection. My question is, does this immersion require an RCD? My research indicates that...

Bathroom light switch, is a 45A shower switch, wired strangely.

My customer asked me to change her intermittently working bathroom pull switch. When i arrived I saw that it was a 45A shower pull switch purely being used to switch the light on and off. Wired in 1mm. However, there was a conductor in the both the L and N in the supply side, and just one...

Using a dimmer switch for bathroom light, with a fan.

My customer would like a dimmer switch for the bathroom lights. The light switch also switches on the fan. They are not worried that the fan will not work if the dimmer switch is switched on when on low. However, I wanted to get some opinions on whether there is any realistic danger involved...

Understanding the Construction industry Scheme (CIS)?

Hello all.. In am probably going to get some ongoing work from a chap who builds cabins. I shall be installing the electrics. He has said that he is CIS registered. I have not come across this before. The government site says this... " Under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)...

Easee one EVCP has a type B RCD fitted in it.....

A customer has asked me to fit an easee one EVCP. I notice that it has a type B RCD in it (I think). We are not supposed to fit a 'lower grade' RCD upstream, due to the blinding effects. Its not possible (at least not easily) to fit a type B RCBO into the 'fusebox' branded consumer unit, so I...

Fault finding a neutral to earth fault on S plan?

The RCBO is tripping on the heating system. It is actually an S plan plus. There is a neutral to earth fault of 0.02Mohms, this was tested at the FCU on the load side, with the load disconnected from the FCU. The RCBO can be on and the boiler has all its displays working, but when you press...

How to tell if type A or AC RCD without markings?

A customer has been told by British Gas that their boiler requires a type A RCD. Below is a picture of the existing CU. Does anyone know if these RCD's (CGD - control gear direct) have a marking somewhere, or, if they are just always Type A? Or perhaps always Type AC?

Do i still need to add a switch fuse?

The cut out fuse is 60A. The new CU is over 3m away. I'm not going to be putting a fuse <60A in a switch fuse. I'm not too sure what to do? Nothing? Get DNO to up main fuse to 80?

    Public Liability insurance and indemnity?

I have just had my renewal quote through. It's up to £290. This includes employees liability and £5000 for tools. It doesn't include indemnity. I thought this was high, but when I've gone on line to compare, it comes out in the £400 + range. I just wondered if there were any recommendations...

Heads up on a silly priced screwfix offer!

Screwfix are offering a 10 pack of dry lining boxes for free if you buy certain lap products. So, if you buy just one cheap Lap product (i.e Lap blank plate for 50p, you get 10 x dry ling boxes worth £3.50). I've just got 300 boxes and 30 blank plates for £15. Should last me a good few years...

    My recent Napit assessment.

Just a bit of reassurance for those of you who are about to be assessed for the first time, and some advice for those who are already registered. The initial assessment takes around 3 - 4 hours. Subsequent assessments around 1.5 hours. They are definitely not out to fail you, they want your...

    Life after Napit/NICEIC?

I'm a good few years from retirement (aged 52), but I am slowly winding down my hours. One of the things I dislike is the yearly assessment. It always goes absolutely fine, and I know it always will, however It's a stressful couple of hours, plus a stressful few hours/days leading up to it. Not...

Do I need to use plastic back boxes for Lime plaster?

The customer has specified plastic recessed back boxes and stainless steel screws for a rewire, as it will all be lime plaster. Is this absolutely necessary? If so, I have found the marshall tufflex boxes, but finding the right screws seem harder. I can find 30mm stainless stell socket screws...

    Plumbers and builders are excellent!!!

I'm 3 days ahead on a rewire. Things are going brilliantly. I relax, drink cups of tea, have a bit of an inward content smile at how easy it is to make a bit of money whilst enjoying life.... Then.... yesterday.... a little bit of water starts trickling down the wall. Turns out, I have...

Worcester Bosch course on wiring for central heating systems

I have just finished a 2 day course on 'Wiring for central heating systems' as my knowledge was fairly poor on this subject. It was well run, good lunch, finished on time and I learnt a lot. I know there are some on this forum with excellent knowledge of heating electrics, but I 'think' there...

    Google nest leaving the UK

I have just been on a heating (electrics) course and was informed that 'Nest' are leaving the UK. Just thought it is worse you guys knowing as it may change your preference for which smart thermostats you fit. I'm not really sure how this will affect anyone if you do still choose to fit Nest...

    What is this earthing arrangement?

As in the title? I can see the earth running up by the side of the supply cable from the ground (see picture), but with TNCS this earth would go directly to the CU, or perhaps be in a MET. This earth appears to go down, rather than towards all the other earths of the flats. In the picture...

Coding for earths wrapped around each other?

Hello all.. I have just completed an EICR. The earths for the ceiling lights are wrapped around each other (neatly and well, numerous times) and sheathed in old green sheath. They are then poked up into the ceiling void. This is obviously all wrong nowadays, but I can't decide if it's a C2 or...

Average price for an EICR? Another poll! Please read post before voting.

I'm going a bit poll crazy at the moment. I love polls! This one is just a bit of fun. It's obviously very inaccurate and there will be many variations on price, but... Lets just ask 'What price would you charge for an EICR on an average 2-3 bed house'? No outbuildings, one consumer unit (10...
