Working in an old house... a really old house. This is the one with the strange fluorescent light from another thread.
Anyway. There’s a door under the stairs that goes to a small cellar. I was just wondering what might have been it’s use at one time.

the cellar is only the area of half the living room. The rest of the house is concrete floors apart from this bit.
Maybe 5’ high, 14’ wide and 12’ deep.
The window in the living room looks like at one time to be an arch, but nothing shows on the outside, I think the stones have been remortared.

Under this window, there is a small alcove in the cellar, with a sloped base.... to drop or roll things in??

outside, on the pavement, there is evidence of something. Maybe a grate, or a door?

And at the far wall of the cellar, there is this little shelf.

I think the floor above this was higher at one time, the living room being smaller than it is now. There is evidence of a closed up doorway at the solid floor end.

could it have been a pub? Or just simply for horses?
Ps. In no way am I inferring that any of you are as old as this house... circa 150 years

Thinking coal. But it’s not a huge house to fill the basement with coal unless the house belonged to the local coal man, and this was his stock room.
