Hi,

I install a few heat pumps in a domestic situation from time to time. I have recently started renovating an old 1800s cottage which has no access to mains gas which made me think about putting in an air source heat pump. I was looking at an ecoDan as I've been told they are best on the market right now.

However.. I have also been warned away from them and told to use an oil boiler over anything. Local plumbers I work with say they have had people complaining it's costing upwards of £150 a week to run!

I haven't had much feedback from customers who use them day in day out as a lot of the work I do is wiring second homes and holiday homes!
Can anyone shed some light on them for me and let me know if they really are that expensive to run??
I have had a couple quotes for a 9kw ASHP for my property and it'll be running underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs.

Much appreciated!

Heat pumps are intended for use within highly insulated properties, as with all heating systems they'll be expensive to run if much of the heat they generate is allowed to escape.

Hi - bored with being sick here, so I looked up their "14kW" model - single phase running current is 15A and 35A startup. So round it to 4KW and if you are paying 12p per kWhr (say) that's 48p per hour, £11.52 per day or about £80 a week if it's running at max 24/7.

Maybe not £150, but not cheap if they've had to leave it on all the time.
