Was asked to look at a CU upgrade due to a plumber being called out he upgraded the shower to a 9 kw removed the existing 30 amp 3036 fuse for a 40 CB and then said to the 84 year old maybe best get an electrician to put a safety fuseboard in should cost you £300

So i said why is the plumber too busy to put it in himself ?????????? and does he always set prices for other peoples work ? so this is what I found.

1. Shower wired in 6mm pulls 37 amps cable clipped to the wall then thrown over the ceiling space 11 metres in total me thinks it needs upgraded to 10mm any comments ?
2. Main cut out at the bottom of the stairs CU in a cupboard upstairs about 15 metres away the supply cable is a 16mm micc earthed at the cut out end via a clamp but nothing at the DB side so do you run a seperate earth or clamp on to the MICC at both ends??.
3. No water or gas earthing.
Other than that he has been paid and I am the guy giving it I am sorry to tell you but......

Forgot to add the old lady was going to get a electrical maintenance contract for her energy supplier but the very nice man who came to see her scared the life out of her due to as he said the state of the DB

and i take it there's no rcd??? the 6mm will be ok though at 37A, unless smothered in itchy poo.

This is exactly why we now have 'verification of voltage drop' in our sequence of test results, because of stupid idiots working beyond the scope of their competence.

And that would be why she was charged half a day to replace the shower and the 2 day prices she got from those who would do it properly were rejected.

I have never from day one understood how they could justify defined scope competence
You are either defined as competent or not.
What lunatic or which lunatic advisors convinced the government to go down that path of folly

i dont get it either des. people dont understand that electricity is like no other source of energy.
people understand the dangers of gas, because when it goes wrong, an explosion occurs (in some cases), or people die from CO poisoning.
With electricity, it causesno end of electric shocks, but many go unreported, and it causes thousands of house fires, but the causes ore often unreported in the media.
I think that the fire brigade, along with our governing bodies/scams, should do more to make people more aware of the dangers.

Well said John.

The other utility of water? Soon as someone gets a leak they will go off to a shed and get some push fit elbows and a length of poly pipe and fix it asap. The same person gets a small shock or a socket stops working they are reluctant to call a sparky because they think it will cost a fortune and we all know that is not true.
