Got called to look at some downlighting which wasn't working in a 5 year old house. Every single light fitting was a 12v 35w halogen downlight, each with its own transformer, all on dimmer switches (even the utility room). 93 units in total!!!!

Hi,

At least you only need to carry one type of spare lamp. Why 24v with all those trannies. Just as a matter of interest , what was the fault? Although I think we can all have a pretty good guess.

Regards.

I did discuss an upgrade, but as all the dimmer switches are unsuitable for LED's, plus the existing units are 90mm diameter, we were talking about a lot of money. They have been warned that it will be an ongoing battle.

The rough calculator on ledhut's website suggests an £85 a month saving on the leccy bill based on 4 hours use a day. That's before the savings on replacement lamps and trannys, and a sparky to change them are factored in.

I've done plenty of these. The latest was 65 down lights but did install led fittings. Not GU10 but sealed units. Wasn't the cheapest job I've ever done for sure but I do seem to have a customer base of extremely minted people. Some of my customers have so much money to spend its amazing. I see how the other half live. WOW

I'd advise an upgrade to a single pendant in each room. Ah, the good old days!

Actually I did upgrade 2 of them in the bathroom to a single chrome surface mounted IP rated florry, due to the fact that the downlights were inserted tightly in 4" of cellotex, and had overheated (surprise surprise).
The clients know that they should get them changed, but the initial cost is just scary.

Before I renovated my house 3 years ago we had 50w MR16 downlights in every room and there was 64 of them in total which were installed before we bought the place. I installed energy saving lighting during the building work and our electricity bill halved even though the house was 260 sq meters larger with 3 extra bedrooms and 2 more bathrooms. Never underestimate the cost of halogen lighting, our electricity unit price has doubled in the last 3 years, I shudder to think what they would cost to run at todays prices.

I rewired a 4 bed detached a in 2009,the owner would have nothing but 50w halogens,112 of them.Every room had them, the owner didnt like things that dangled down(dont expect her hubby got any then lol).

You complied with building regs then? :)
I did bang on about part L,but was told to shut up fit what they wanted or collect my P45,the firm spent £500k on a bar/restaurent which has gone bust, worst people ive ever worked for,got made redundant in 2010.Now i recommend led everytime.Last job fitted 14 arouras very impressed with those.

I have to say, that's the best part about being self-employed... If someone asks me to do something against the Law or regs, I just walk.
