thanks they did ask what they owed though, but i felt i couldnt charge as i hadnt done anything.

£50! I got same tomorrow. One of my regulars has tried fitting a light fitting and mixed wiring up so no kitchen lights. Told em £50 to come out tomorrow and sort. I am in business to make money and not friends;)

they will go on to tell somone how fair you were and not "rip them off" thats best advertising just hope they dont say "i know an electrician, he works for free!!! lol. i tell my "special "customers "just chuck us £20 or £30 or whatever and say if they know somone who wants work doing not to mention<initially> callout or typical costs as they believe your doing them a favour, they come back again and again...

I had a bloke ring me up last week about 6.30 saying his sockets not working and yes when i got there RCD had tripped,i was there 5 min that included quick auto test on RCD ,it was two streets away from my house and he was 82 so i said i wouldnt charge him this time but left him some cards,he insisted i took a tenner for my trouble and i thought no more of it,his daughter phoned me up and wants a quote for some electrics on her new extension ,so hopefully i will get that job.

I like to think i'm a tough guy but to be honest NO i wouldn't have charged them and would have hoped they would pass on my name as a honest tradesman

True. But my solicitor charges me £15 for a damn phone call. Why should we be different. Ah, the age old 'show compassion and it will get you referrals trick'. If you are really desperate for work then try it. The way I see it - nothing is free and if you offer for free then the punter is taking you in de ---

i once sold a mobility scooter, sale or return, failed to tell supplier and with proceeds blew it on a hybrid turbo for my old cossie..............

I always do this! In my head I always say no matter how small the job i'm gonna charge a call out fee but when it comes to "how much do I owe" I always say "don't worry about it" Idiot!
