hi,

went to the shops for lunch, ummed and arr'd what to have but went to chip shop, brief conversation ensued and the bloke running the shop said 'I have two switches and I want the swapped, can you do that?'

I had a look and they are the controls for his deep fat fryers.
They look identical and I think he uses one less than other and he wants to swap them because the one he does use, is a bit iffy...
The back of it looks like all push in connections, like spade crimp things.....I said id have a look before i work tomorrow am...

Is there any reason i shouldnt touch this apart from the fact its covered in grease?

probably D/P 16A or 20A switches. usually with neon. easy enough to fit new one.

i should have taken a picture, it has a switch and a temperture dial and some other stuff.... but on the reverse it has maybe 10-15 connections...

but I didnt get to inspect it closely, as I was not wanting a face full of hot chip fat or my food to get burned while the man was distracted.. thinking what i saw was just the switch gear gubbins and it must just have a single feed to it from somewhere?

but i got a free lunch from it already and will get money on completion so wanna try and squeeze it in somehow

Yes you have no idea what they are, so leave alone.

By the sounds of it you are looking at a control panel for a industrial fryer.
These are usually made from stainless steel and have all the thermostat knobs, neons, switches etc etc built in to them.
I would not just change 2 of the switches around if you are going to take this on.
Get the part numbers and order the right part from the manufacturer or a catering spares firm (Cant remember the name of the one we use sorry)
Also look at the back of the panel carefully as if they have not been maintained properly they can get in some real messes and you end up taking on more than you want with melted cables or gear coated in fat/grease!
Ive been inside some nice ones and some bad ones and if its a bad one you dont want to touch it with a 10 foot barge pole!

And the cables have a nasty habit of falling to bits. - And they are never cold. They will have you there AFTER they have used them unless they have packed in,

hmm yes, i was a bit concerned about 'a can of worms' and don't have time to be faffing, think i may just pay for my 'free' chips and steer myself out of harms way...

don't want a big fat sweaty angry chip man after me..

And yes it was an industrial fryer, fish and chips shop style....not seen many fish and chips with bench top fryers...

But all the fryers and controls work, i think it was just the main one he uses is a bit 'sticky' or something..he literally wanted fryer 2 controller swapped with fryer 4 controller .he didn't make much sense to me but id rather leave a bit of extra cash to save the hassle....as you say he may then feel entitled to call me back because 'hey, it no work no mow mayn - u break it, now fix it'

I mean i only wanted a sandwich from next door but the newsagents produce looked more green and furry than id like to attempt to digest...

That wasn't what I meant LOL, The point was that it was a full control panel for a multitude of things on the fryer not just on off switch for 1 Fryer.

Years ago we had a unit that had a control panel that would not of been out of place on the star ship enterprise!
It controlled several hot cupboards, several hot plates, lights, fans and god knows what else!

Aye some have them as they will not do bread crumbs in the main pans:wink5:

haha ok, well thanks for the advice...and yeah it sure wasn't a basic gizmo controlling apparatus. It was really quite greasy and made me wonder wtf am i doing standing behind the shop counter looking at switches when all i wanted was some nuggets and chips..

Aye , most of them are computer controlled , and have gas interlocking systems . Best left alone if you come across someone who wants to" swap" the bits.

I'd also advise you avoid it unless you're fully aware of what the system is, how it's configured and how it works. Also the existing condition would be a big consideration. Commercial chip fryers have redundant safety hi-limit safety systems built in, if you work on them you should be prepared to test the safety system is operational afterward.

Yeah, thanks everyone. Took the advice on board, and told 'Kenny the chip shop guy' its a no-go for me, he also insisted that i needn't pay for my lunch either. Result.

speaking of battered things, anyone ever tried a battered pizza? my ex (from scotland) used to say they were amazing...I am skeptical to say the least...

Never heard of battered pizza but ime not suprised.
Scots will batter anything lol
I remember going into a place in scotland some years ago and they actually had a sign that said "you buy it we will batter it"
They served everything from choc bars to kebabs and sfc.
