I crimp components like discharge resistors, then I tin the ends in with silver solder for a better mechanical connection....there's not much I see used with solid wire outside of small controls cabinets and SELV panel gear these days, even lighting gear trays just have a big slab of a printed circuit board inside on the new ones....
 
If you are looking to spend a few coins and are wanting professional grade crimp tools, you could look at cable craft on google, they sell to the railways and power companies....
I got given a set of £60 crimpers 3 years ago by a good old sparky that I was working with....first day working beside him, he insisted that I accepted them and had a couple of sets of the same himself....I used them for a while (3 hours on the day I was given them) then some bgger stole them before the end of the day out of my toolbag...
I bought a really good unbranded set in Glasgow for £15.00 from a well known purveyor of tools for all (which has a website shop too) and they do me fine.... I have them in my tool belt...
