Hi guys, i bought a screwdriver for the terminals in a CU today. Ok you say! but the reason im posting this is because ive been an apprentice then electrician for 8 years now, and only found out such a tool existed recently. I put this down to the fact the guys i learnt from never used them or mentioned they existed, and neither did my college, let alone have any for us to use during practical lessons. Therefore ive always used a pozi screwdriver because thats what i thought u used.

Question 1 - anyone else had same thing?
Question 2 - does proper one make a difference (i dont even know what u call them!)
Question 3 - why aren't colleges educating students about them.

No not a torque one, just like a pozi/phillips screwdriver but with a slightly different head, designed for tightening mcb's etc (so im told !!!)

Ok thelondonway, maybe ive been given false info and was right using a pozi all along! Managed to pick one up today at my wholesaler tho!

I got two ck modulo drivers, starting to wear out and not hold so well but had them two years, I know what your saying about working with older guys my dad was the same, no modern tools or gadgets!, get to a local tool fair and go wild

He means a plus/minus 1000v VDE screw driver designed for the combination slot cross screws which are in every CU and MCB..........think Wera do a set.....keep meaning to buy some

CK Modulo screwdrivers! I use one, but yes there are still a few sparks I know who don't use them.

Make sure you use the right size or else it breaks the tip off! grrrrr

Yes the CK modulo driver had one for over five year now and I've never ever seen anyone else have one either! It is the perfect driver for circuit breakers and people slag it when they see it but there the first ones to borrow it!

I also have a couple of modulo (plus minus) screwdrivers. They make small and large and they also make them in philips and in pozidrive. As already pointed out it's critical to use the correct size and format otherwise they're very prone to breaking the tips.

Cheers guys, looks like its quite a new tool judging by the replies, hence why i was never taught about them. i only bought one size so will have to get the smaller one again. Thanks all

3-4 years ago i bought a Wera screwdriver Pouch that had a handle with various slot in screwdriver bits including Pozidrive/slothead/various panel key attachments/some strange shaped screwdriver type heads.

This is how i discovered the MCB screwdriver.....as that's what the 'strange shaped scredriver type heads' were. Had absolutely no idea these existed until i bought that set and it was only when i was in the wholesalers asking 'WTF are these for?' that another sparks informed me.

Makes you realise what a sheltered life you lead when you dont go to trade shows etc...

quality tool, i had to purchase one when i could not loosen a legrand mcb for testing purposes this loosened it straight off use it all time now and seem to get about 2 more turns on more than using a pozi, god help next person that comes along if you tighten with this and they not got one

I have the wera ones a big and small. Grip lovely on MCB screws.
bought them because I am a tool -----.

they have no other use and is quite funny when someone nicks one out your bag to undo a 1'8" and can't.

I have a CK MCB screwdriver, they hold lovely on the screw head, giving you that bit extra torque on the terminal which I guess could make all the difference. although to be honest, I only remembered I had it the other day! always used a pozi 2! :P

Ive used one they are good, but can still get just a tight termination using the right size flat head.....pozi can round off......plus it is just another screwdriver to find/get out the case.

they come in 2 types philips and pozi, and 2 sizes large and small, wera usually do them at toolfair £10 a pair, but if you buy their set in the pouch with the interchangeable handle you get all 4 plus cab keys,4 flats pozi's and philips, they are a great tool but just like pozi and philips screwdrivers you need to use the right modulo bit ie pozi or philips.

Had my +- for about 10 years now. Bought them from RS components. They are "the" screwdriver for most CU/MCB/RCD/RCBO screws. Shame the Wiha don't realise this, as the Torque screwdriver set doesn't include them....

These screwdrivers seem to fit better than the pozi drive i got one as a freebie they are just perfect for tightening rcd terminals & mcbs they do seem to grip better & not so suseptible to camming out when applying pressure. the torque screwdriver i have just purchased has one with it included.

I've used mine for 3 or 4 years now, definitely get a better grip using the correct screwdriver! What worries me a bit is quite a few of the youngsters I see, they've been to college, finished their apprenticeship, but still don't know the difference between pozi and philips.

Oh yes they do, but only the Wiha VDE Torque Driver 18 piece set 2872T18 contains SL/PZ1 and SL/PZ2.
The additional interchangeable blades you require for the Wiha VDE Torque Driver are SL/PH1 Cat No. 33585, SL/PH2 Cat No. 33571, SL/PZ1 Cat No. 33572 and SL/PZ2 Cat No. 33586. Or alternatively SL/PZ1 Cat No. 35489 and SL/PZ2 Cat No. 35490 slim bits are available if you have the slim bit adaptor.

So that begs the question, which type of screwhead do most MCB manufacturers use, Pozi or Phillips? Whilst I know the difference between the two in principal, I've never been able to tell visually, only by using either a PZ or PH driver and seeing which feels the best fit.

Thanks mate. I being a bit dim (killed a load of brain cells last night) but are these mystical MCB / CU etc bits the ones coded PH1 and PH2?
