I’m Domestic Installer and have been for just over two years. Is it just people in my area or has nobody cottoned onto the fact that they can’t rewire their own house anymore or the house of their neighbour.

The numbers of people who still seem to be DIY sparking on a full time basis is staggering, yet from what I can see nobody seems to be cracking down on it. Having said that it’s not just your average householder there are trades people doing it as well.

I was on a job a few months back and the flat next door had a £14k kitchen fitted by well known kitchen supplier, new ring main, new lighting circuit, new cooker circuit and the two guys fitting it didn’t have an electrical qualification between them.

Almost everyone you speak to says the same thing ‘If I do some electrical work who’s gonna know?’, perhaps there right. Who is supposed to be policing this building regulation?

I can’t say I have ever seen or heard of to date anyone in my area or in the media for that matter who has been prosecuted for sparking without the proper qualifications.

For every one job I get there must ten or more being done by DIY sparks. Just think how much more work we would all have if the most breached building regulation ever written was actually enforced.

When I signed up with the NIC I naively thought they would police things like this, alas no, instead my £400 annual subscription just gives me the right to submit jobs, and a quarterly new letter of course.

my mate was telling me that he went on a job that a " qualified " spark had done and he had to put it all right the " qualified " spark had made a right balls up.
anyway tenent is well miffed at having to payout twice and wanted to complain so my mate points her in the direction of nic and building authority and nether of them were bothered and didnt want to know.
