Extension to CU

Hi Guys,

I've just recently qualified and been asked to do a job for a mate. He has half his garage partitioned as a wet room. Contains a shower and extractor fan. His CU is already full and he wants a separate 2 way CU to feed the wet room. Is the best way to go about this to sepeate the tails from the meter into service connector blocks and feed each CU seperately?

Any Suggestions welcome.

Think its best to price the job up on materials only ie is it cheaper to replace consumer unit with a larger one or buy a seperate unit and use a henly block as you suggest then let your mate decide which we he would like it done

Installing a separate CU will be cheaper then changing the CU for a larger, as you will need to do full tests on all the circuits plus the additions.

IF you do decide to install a stand alone CU for the shower etc, then its only that you need certify.

Dont forget to ensure all earthing arrangements are satisfactory.

Alternatively, you could put a 50 amp breaker in the original consumer unit to feed a new one, then swap one circuit from the original board into the additional board and hence you have spare ways. This way you only have to test one original circuit and you also only have one main switch, the idea of the company fuse as the sole means of isolation is always an iffy one

Good solution to the " One Means of Isolation" situation and does away with the henley blocks scenario !........providing the main switch on the existing c.u.is of adequate rating for the additional expected load of course.
