Hi lads and ladies,

You may have noticed me playing around a lot with combinations of advertisements. I think I'm kinda getting to the point where we have revenue coming in again, but without annoying too many people with ads.

I'm just doing some testing with regards to what % of our logged in users use ad-blocking software, and what % of users NOT logged in use ad-blocking software, then I'll tweak a bit more.

And then I had a thought.

Separate to the sponsors, we use Google Adsense for revenue, that's the sidebar ad we all see, and then if you have less than 100 posts, you see some Adsense ads in threads and things in various places depending on how long the threads are and whatnot.

Now I've found a way to give a % of our Adsense revenue to members of the forum! And I'm seriously giving it some thought.

So you'd need to sign up to Google Adsense and enable either all sites, or add our URL(s) to your account, so that you get paid via ads on our forum.

Then what I can do is set a % per usergroup. So, for example (and I'd need to play around with this to ensure we don't lose our own revenue - so this isn't the % I'd perhaps end up with ongoing)....

Registered Members get say 10% of the revenue from threads they've posted
TilersForums Arms members get 20%
Trusted Advisors get 30%

So what this would then do is change all the ads within threads you have posted, say, 30% of the time. So all ads on a said page load would show your own adsense ID and you'd get the revenue from clicks coming from that page for that amount of time. Then the other 70%, the forums own adsense ID would be used so the forum would get its cash.

The idea is this would perhaps encourage users to A) post some decent long threads which will get discussion going, article-style threads with questions in them (to attract replies and keep them current topic) would get the member more cash than just one-liners which don't get replied to as much and just drop off the thread list quickly. And B) encourage users who understand ads, and perhaps use ad-blocking software, to turn off their ad-blocking, and actually help themselves and the forum earn some revenue.

What are your thoughts on this?

I take that as a no then! Lol

More like: If your not familiar with the concept and not seen it in action, then it needs a bit of thinking about before replying. Are there any downsides for the members?

This seems interesting.
Why don't people post a list of positives and negatives as I know nothing about this.

To be honest I think it would perhaps change the dynamics of the forum, and not necessarily in a good way.

Totally agree, no1 posts here atm for any financial gain just advice and help, i think it may spoil the site people posting for a financial gain.

Well, it's a new idea and I didn't implement it before checking lads. If you have questions I can do my best to answer them.

Post quality and reasoning is the main one I guess.

Would a post that's informative and long (as the guy who posted it wants some commission) harm the forum?

Would a guy spending days on end posting dribble to get paid cause the quality of posts to drop off?

Would a specific forum category be required to post in for said type of posts?

I'm unsure on all parts.

Would a guy who's willing to post an awesome thread not already post it anyway?!?! We have an awesome team now we've got rid of the knobs.
