Hi guys, wiring a new build set of flats, three story, architect has requested smoke detectors in each flat, and separate smokes in the landlord corridors and staircases. My question is when to use fp cable, can I wire it all in t and e in the landlord areas as there is no control panel type system?
The cables will all be above the ceiling at a height of 150mm from the surface the only exposed part would be riser cupboards which would be trunked??
Any help would be appreciated ...

Sorry not making myself clear, domestic mains powered interlinked with batt back up.... I thought still ok in t and e but starting to doubt in common areas?

That's what I've started to run in landlords areas , already done flats , but my mind was thinking does it come under different fire regs as an area the public has access to.... Architect hasn't specified and didn't know!!!!

Luckily the corridors are L shaped on each floor and only 3-4 meters each side, I have put smoke heads in each side of the L shape covering staircases as well, more than what was requested, but yes got little or no help really!!!!
Thanks for your help can rest a little easier !!

Was yours a specific spec, house being converted into flats (2) and its spec isld2 but hasn't mentioned panel when read up about it , just linked in all rooms except bathroom is what I read

need to dig deeper

the FP Cable shall be used for Fire alarm system, Electrical Substation and in other serous location where chances of Fire is likely.

Under BS5839 part 1 yes.....under part 6 no

From your spec this is a 3 level property, converted into flats. I think you have miss understood the architecs spec.
This will be a Grade A install and therfore will require a full fire alarm system, consisting of main control panel etc and wired in FP cable.
And will usually only cover comunial areas, Knowing these guys he will also ask for seperate non linked mains powered heat/smoke in each flat.

Tazz, is there a requirement for the communal areas to be covered by an addressable system or does that not matter in this instance? Just curious, haven’t got BS5839 or I would read up on it myself.

As High Tower has stated there is no preference, addressable or conventional is fine. the object is to protect the communial areas by floor and zone...addressable is becoming cheaper and a great way of id devices

I'm wiring a similar set of apartments, architect usless so asked building control what they want, they asked for smokes in each apartment as usual, then heat detectors in kitchens as usual but interlinked into heat alarms in communal areas so if there is a fire in any kitchen or communal area eveyone is warned....makes sence to me!!

Most new build flats I've worked on have asked for a head off the communal alarm to be inside each flat as you say to alert others if there is a fire in a flat. I personally recommend this on installs where it isn't a new build also as I feel it makes sense.
