Life after Napit/NICEIC?

I'm a good few years from retirement (aged 52), but I am slowly winding down my hours.

One of the things I dislike is the yearly assessment. It always goes absolutely fine, and I know it always will, however It's a stressful couple of hours, plus a stressful few hours/days leading up to it. Not that stressful, but enough to think about avoiding it.

My question is, how did any of you guys find it after leaving your registering body?

I know a sparky in aberdeen who hasn't been part of a registered body ever and he constantly does extensions etc with no issues ,I don't think there as strict up here .your right i find it's not just the days leading up to it but the months.i suppose it's how well your organised and with so many changes since the 18th and the issues around ac rcds ,spds ,afdds etc it's getting harder and harder just to do a simple job .bring back the 17th lol.what grates me is you go and look at a job in what you think is a fairly new build and it's a hager board with ac rcds

It is a bit of a joke, when they screwed down the domestic sector, you had kitchen fitters getting domestic installer quals that weren't even in the trade. At least they have stopped this fiasco. I am too old now so don't really care but what I can say is know how to terminate MICC cable and work with the stuff lol

It's all I did as a first and second year apprentice, havn't made an end off in years ,gave my old boss a shot of my joistripper and crimper years ago and never seen it back.gutted.it was a true art watching my journeyman glanding pyros into boards .the apprentices got left with the links between lights and legs between sockets.i think it would be like riding a bike though you never forget .

I don't believe the NICEIC and NAPIT have been doing their job properly for many years looking at the standard of some of the installation work their registered contractors turn out
Then move on to EICR's I don't think I have seen one in recent times that gives an accurate representation of the installation detailed on the first page, it seems limitations are used to limit the workload rather than being genuine reason why some inspection points or tests cannot be carried out
UKAS need to carry out a review of the accredited organisations and come up with an improvement plan to raise the bar and while it may upset some who can't or don't want to meet the higher standards the industries credibility needs to be improved after the decades of decline

All anyone asks for is the test certs. Just had a job where the building control is asking for the cert so asked them why, goes onto tell me so they can allow the electrics to be notified through them

I've done loads of jobs where i've forgotten to forward certificates and to notify, never ever been pulled up for it.

I got sent what I can only assume was an email to all napit members reminding them not to send test sheets to planning etc but inform them of the works first .like you say I've always just passed certs to customer ,never had an issue,that being said I can only think of 2 jobs where a warrent has been in place ,the rest are eic and minor works.

yeah I saw that too. Think these private companies are taking on everything include the electrics. The email was probably them getting worried incase all their members cotton on.

Also, when it comes to a house sale and solictors are asking for certs for windows, gas, electrics etc, they ever only ask for the electrical certifdicates, not the lame part p notification.

It's really annoying and I think unfair how some not all joiners and builders on private builds or extensions never have to do any training and are just deemed competent as long as they follow the architects instructions and building control .I'm not saying there out of touch as experience counts for alot but sparkys have to jump through hoops .constant health and safety courses ,must be part of a scheme ,must be part of the building standards division etc.as long as your up to date with your relevent qualifications regarding the work your carrying out ,are a registered company and all insurance are in place and at least completed the bsd course and are aware of building standards relevent to electrical works then what more do they want from you .I work for a builder whi is nearing retirement and he hasn't done a course of any kind in over 30 years but he seems to hold the council in his pocket.

On occasion, my builder has been asked to ask me to send through my Napit registration number so the building authority can check that i am registered. This is the main thing that is bothering me about not being registered. Not being able to carry out larger work for the builder. It's a good team and I like being part of it.

Well you have two choices keep the work through membership or lose the work.

I had the same email from NAPIT about registering all jobs through the online portal.
Several local authorities around my area, when the customer applies for full planning, expect to see an EIC or MW cert in the sign off paperwork, and don't require it registering as they already have what they need!
Its bonkers, the idea back in 2005 was a great idea but has been poorly implemented and become a massive cash cow.
I have been registered with most governing bodies since that time, (apart from NIC) and never had any use for them apart from registering domestic jobs.

It all needs some order bringing to it but will likely never happen as it makes too many companies a lot of money!

Dare I ask are you going it alone and doing all kinds of jobs including notifiable work, without being in a CPS

As of now, I'm quite confident that I won't lose much. Never in 19 years has anyone asked if im Part P registered.

But you said you were winding down ? So you won't really want these jobs. I'm in exactly the same position as you, same age too. I'm only working a few days now and turn the bigger jobs down so thinking I don't need the CPS. It's a difficult thought
