I smoke myself and tbh I wish I had never started but tbh I think this is madness. I have only ever bought cigs from a vending machine in Tenerife. I would rather smoke my undies than pay the extortionate amounts they want from the vending machines. I also believe that whilst in a place of pubs or nightclubs I don`t really see an issue them being there. although I can see the point if they were lets say in an airport or some other public place. I can`t help but think it`s just another step too far with the government trying to control us.

I'm a chain smoker as well for getting on for 38 years, well 40ish a day, it's not good.

Govts pick on smoking because it's an easy target, 'costs the NHS XB£s a year to treat dying smokers' They never tell you about the overall profit the country's coffers rakes in from tobacco tax. If they were that serious about it, they'd make baccy illegal. No ****ing chance, its down to the same old story of money.

Again, that's why I don't vote.

I don't do politics, I get far too wound up by it all.

Personally I don't give a rats --- wether vending machines stay or not. I dont think I've ever bought smokes from one anyway.

One thing that stands out to me is the piece

"The government is due to begin a public consultation before the end of this year on whether to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes."

Cane we safely assume that this is almost the same government that also spent a fortune on a public consultation over putting those daft images of people dying & rotten body parts on cigarette packets not too long ago???

Makes my blood boil, particularly in the face of the 'cut backs'

:bomb2:

and have you noticed how patronising the government anti smoking "adverts" are? they treat us as if we were imbeciles. we know smoking is bad for the health, but so is butter, sugar, salt, red meat, going outside in sunlight, not jogging 10 miles each day will lead to obesity, knackered joints etc., etc.

i've paid for any NHS treatment i need and 10 years in a nursing home out of the tax on smokes over 50 years, so i will continue to smoke and support the NHS in its treatment of alcoholics, heroin addicts, fitness freak injuries, loonies, immigrants who have contributed nil , and any other wastes of space.

i now find that every day i am breaking the law by having a smoke in my own van, within 7 paces of my back door, at a car boot sale on a council owned field. i'm just waiting to be done for child abuse by lighting up within 5 miles of a school, and for contributing to global warming.

and that's my rant for a sunny saturday am.

I watched my dad and sister die with the affects of "smokes" but I have no problem with people smoking as long as they do not blow smoke in my face and as for nanny state just look at the registration companies they change the rules as they go along plus they want a say in everything we do but dont want to take any responsability yep that about sums it up

When I worked in a bar I used to regularly buy cigarettes from the machine, but that's when they were £3 for a pack of 16. We had the biggest machine Sinclair Collis did, and still sold out of almost everything by the end of the week.
Last time I checked smoke machines charged about £7 for 16. Stuff that.
If people want to pay it though, that should be their choice.

You can regulate all you want, people will still do what people do. The death sentence doesn't stop murders from murdering, prohibition didn't stop people from drinking and banning vending machines won't stop people from smoking either.

The UK has been a 'nanny state' for decades, it never ceases to amaze me how a few politicians and do gooders on some kind of power trip or just trying to make a name for themselves can dictate down to the smallest detail what people can and can't do with their own lives.

and those bloody cyclists that ride 2 or 3 abreast on narrow country lanes at 10mph . only reason they are there is coz it's illegal to knock 'em off.

I went to menorca last year and the only place you can by cigs are in licensed premises,so underage people for starters cant buy them, theres an idea for these idiots,so everyone in the eyes of the govt has no common sense or good judgement nowadays, you dont get the chance to make your own mind up anymore, rules, rules and more rules.

and now you have to look 25 or older to prove you are 18. what a bloody farce. soon, we'll all have to show pension books to buy smokes and booze.

It started long before the blair years mate, anyone remember that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn't allowed to be called that in this country? It was called Teenage Mutant 'HERO' Turtles, remember? Stupid example I know, but this is when I realized that this PC crap was here to stay. Liebore was just the hammer that was used to smash all sense of right and wrong and subvert and convert 'centre ground' politics into left-wing ideology. Remember that yesterday's student demonstrator is today's Government Minister and senior Civil Servant. I can't see anything changing for another 20 years.

Sick ain't it? My missus had to prove her age to fill the car up the other day. She's 30 odd, and ready to drop for christ's sake!!!

I get annoyed at people who doff their caps and bow their heads to the H+S freaks who have infested our society

There are situations where guidance is essential, but these trojans know no bounds.they have poisoned peoples individual ability to choose

Wooden palllets are now used where sturdy stepladders once reigned, that says it all for the nanny state
