Hi, have a lighting circuit containing about 16 phillips led down lighters. They are on a dimmer switch but when dimmed, very little happens to their brightness. Put in a new dimmer and still the same. Any ideas?? Candles is not an option.

Have noticed similar. I think they are just....not like old incandescents and have less range.

Try a Varilight V-pro dimmer, some of the standard dimmers do not permit much dimming. One of the LED recommended ones only dimmed to a total equivalent output of 40W so if you have five 5W LEDs (25W) then they will not dim.

Thats what I used (varilight).says in blurb max 15 luminaires or similar. i have 14 Ge 6w warm white dimmable GU10 Led replacements on one dimmer and it works fine, albeit with a limited range of dimming. But the customer likes them.

at 16 quid inc vat and 7 for the can they are Darn sight cheaper than a dedicated one

I have also read somewhere, that the more led lamps that are on the dimmer, the less they can be dimmed.

May not apply to all makes though.

Hi,
Work a bit about the compatibility between the 16 Phillips led down lighters and the dimmer you (want to) use.

- If you bought the system together it should be dimmable as mention and about specifications.
- If you try a mix now find out more about your 16 Phillips led down lighters dimmable or not as first step (specifications). Not all LED spots are designed as dimmable. Some only on/off.
The LED dimming it is different as mechanism then incandescent (halogen) bulbs which are as a resistor for your dimmer device.
Thank you.

hi, sorry for length of reply time. Working late and kids. As I remember they are the 7w GU 10s and the dimmer is a RPP 60w - 400w

What is your dimmer rated at? Philips state that you have to de-rate down to 10% (I think for their products). So a 400W dimmer would only 40W for LED which on a 6W lamp is only 6 lamps!

I would guess you have too many on it.

They have been fitted (so I have been reliably informed but less of them) in another room and dim to no light at all

I would check they do actually dim rather than take someones word for it

The Varilight was fitted a week ago and there was a very happy builder and as yet an assumed happy customer!!!!!! Lights dimmed to nothing. Thanks to all who replied to this, especially Mr R Burns and Spartykus who endorsed!!
