slow broadband

as title, chronicly slow. phoned ISP ( orange ) should be 8Meg. speed test shows <1Meg. was told that it was because the router was not plugged into the master phone socket. ( as much as i could get from the heavily accented indian girl at the call centre ). the master socket is at the other side of the house and would be a major job to cable to router. does this sound right, as the speed was reasonable before. has been fine for 4 years. only had the problem recently.

Is the master socket one of the BT one where the faceplate plugs into the the socket behind?

why dont you just move your computer to where master socket is and check speed and if is better , thinkink about getting that cable or move permenatly beside master socket, remember test before touch wise one

think so. but from there it goes to 3 slave sockets. the router is in the last one.

Is there an issue with the supplier? mind you they will never admit to that!

What happens to the speed if you plug into the master? Could you use the 13A "devices" to use your home electrics to get the signal across your house?

Did have an issue with this once. Removed the front plug in part and plugged cable into the actual socket part made the world of difference.

The change the socket with a new one.

i spoke to dude other day from bt and the line test has to be 96% before they pass it. and if you extending its 2 and 5 and 3 as you well know so get your bolster out and start chopping, cause slow computers stink

problem is that the master socket is in the front hall and the computers are in the back of the house. can't run at ground level due to oak flooring. can't get upstairs without wrecking wallpaper . only solution would be to go from the external BT box around the outside. happy days. but it was OK before orange sent us a new router. it's a netgear, similar to the old one.might try putting the old one back in before climbing ladders at my time of ( oh sod it, time for a beer.)

how much stuff do you download, as this does effect speed when you start getting near your download limit, they say unlimited downloads but its not, were with bt and when we get near the limit were lucky if the internet stays on for 5 mins. not found a decent isp yet!

i know a few years ago when we were with aol, we had to ring, bt and ask them to turn the gain up on the phone line, this did make a difference.

but now if we ring them the first thing they say is do this n that on your computer, but is has nothing to do with computer as we have 3 laptops that are all wireless and the internet goes off on all 3 at the same time.

so its either down to phone provider or isp.

Contentions ratio? Do you power download? after 5 til about 9 you ll get worse speeds.
Get a wireless router? and wireless card? Flee bay is your friend at times

Do as suggested and try (temporarily even) to connect the router to the master socket and see what speed is negotiated. You can find that in the router admin web page. See what it says for upload and download speeds. If it's substantially below the 8M you used to get then bt need to get their arse in gear. If the speed appears to have been negotiated ok, then try a real speed test on a site like thinkbroadband :: UK Broadband Speed Test (you'll need java installed for that).

When I had a problem, turned out they'd split the line we were using for adsl with someone else to add a second phone line for them.

If the speed is alright at the master socket then it's down to the extensions you have installed, time to do a bit of diagnostics.

There are a number of other things that can affect the apparent speed as well such as speed of DNS resolution etc.

You can get a spectrum read out of the signal on the line using the DSL modem Tool (if your modem is supported) available here: DMT (DSL-Modem Tool) (german site but easy enough to understand).
