Contentions ratio? Do you power download? after 5 til about 9 you ll get worse speeds.
Get a wireless router? and wireless card? Flee bay is your friend at times :)

Do as suggested and try (temporarily even) to connect the router to the master socket and see what speed is negotiated. You can find that in the router admin web page. See what it says for upload and download speeds. If it's substantially below the 8M you used to get then bt need to get their arse in gear. If the speed appears to have been negotiated ok, then try a real speed test on a site like thinkbroadband :: UK Broadband Speed Test (you'll need java installed for that).

When I had a problem, turned out they'd split the line we were using for adsl with someone else to add a second phone line for them.

If the speed is alright at the master socket then it's down to the extensions you have installed, time to do a bit of diagnostics.

There are a number of other things that can affect the apparent speed as well such as speed of DNS resolution etc.

You can get a spectrum read out of the signal on the line using the DSL modem Tool (if your modem is supported) available here: DMT (DSL-Modem Tool) (german site but easy enough to understand).
