You dont say what type of electrical work you have been doing so i will assume ind com and domestic
Seven years post apprentiship should equip you with what you need experience wise with the work so
You dont need to go full time self employed You can stay employed and be self employed at the same time
I say this because unless you already do private work on the weekends and have some contacts then going self employed diving in full throttle is not a good idea You may need time to build up your own workbase It tends to be word of mouth One job leading to another etc I would just do domestics at the start because the material outlay for ind or com can be quite considerable Start off small and expand within a comfort zone
When you kick off you will need public liability insurance This is a definite requirement for any buisness It is cheap as well
Inform the inland revenue that you are self employed from your start date
Try to get yourself registered with one of the scams if you have a mind to do so
The majority of sparks dont bother so it is not a must have
The hardest part for you will be not having the regular weekly wage
Being self employed unless you are subbing to a firm is irratic moneywise Nothing then lots Bills then nothing and so on Holidays may get missed a lot for one reason or the other Work can take control
Anyway good luck to you whatever you decide
