to not tell someone who has done an "electrical Inspection" the difference of earthing arrangement types or any direct information they should already know (unless they are a first year student trying to get a heads up) other than where they can find the relevant information!!

We are starting to get a lot of threads like this on here...

I'm also getting concerned with some of the advice I'm seeing being offered as its inaccurate at times. But I don't want to become the new 'ban all sheds'.

It never, ever fails to amaze me the number of "electricians" that haven't the first clue about the earthing arrangements present on the system they've either just inspected, just installed, just upgraded, or just taken a ---- all over.

It's all the more bloody ridiculous, to be honest, since you can bet your bottom dollar that the FIRST thing they ever heard regarding electrical education were the words ON SITE GUIDE.

And lo and behold, turn your On Site Guides to the first meaningful chapter, obviously, chapter 2 --------

There's barely half a dozen words before the nice little pictures start, which show VERY clearly how each type of system is set out.

On a related note - are we discussing the idiot that was on about upgrading a 6mm supplier's earth somewhere earlier? Scary, indeed.

I read that certain post in complete disbelief, he is not the only one. There are more and more of these "qualified" electricians joining the forum asking basic questions. Then when they get answers like "are you sure you are ready to be doing work on your own if you dont know the basics?" they get all upset and answer with things like "I only came in here for help and i thought that this forum was here to help!!" Well they need to be told that we will help someone that deserves help and doesnt just use the forum to school them or pull them out of a hole when it suits them. It is very frustrating to know that these clowns are doing work that better qualified and trained and more experienced electricians could be doing and yet they expect us to help them do the job.

Probably right......but I'd have thought even the most A.D.D. riddled of us could get to the first picture in the bloody guide before giving up......

The clue, I think was probably in the "taped in the supplier's thick conductor" bit...... sounds fairly TN-S to me on first thought, as TN-C-S is usually earth taken off the service fuse.

I seem to remember - long time ago now - that the service position was one of the first things we learned, and like a lot of stuff it was repeatedly drummed into us too - both on site and in lessons. I have memories of OSGs ending up lobbed at people, getting swatted round the head with the standard - which, I might add we were expected to have both of with us at every lesson, and if we didn't, we didn't get in.

By the end of year one we had to have all the GN's too.

Seem to me the only rule left to be dumbed down is that you can't be colour blind.

Got to be honest, I took exactly that stance with the lad who signed up to get his homework done - the guy who's been asking about ten different faults he needs to create on a three phase circuit.

To be honest, if he's messing about with three phase, he should know how to create most of these faults already.......

Seemed to me he just wants someone to do his homework for him.

I'm just amazed it took till posts 24 & 28 on the third page for the word adiabatic to be brought up (by IQ electrical and myself) on a thread that was all about confirmation on the sizing of an existing earthing conductor.

Ah - it's a big word for a Sunday night, and doubtless, most adiabatics have insulin to help (how I always remembered the word).......

To be honest, given that he couldn't tell the difference between a TN-C-S and a TN-S, what chance was he going to have with adiabatics?

Given that,perhaps a section dedicated to the one off visitor, who is trying to sort a problem,the diy section
Then another for apprentices,where assistance can be given whilst knowing their limitations
The rest of the forum,anyone posting stupid questions,they are free meat for all

Some good ideas Des, although the free meat for all would leave a bit of a mess for us lot to clear up.



Now, i do understand exactly where everyone is coming from with this, but remember, this is a forum for ALL to use, for FREE, and so this will attract the "less abled".

All i ask is that if you feel its a question that you do not wish to answer then dont, move on to the next.

Id like to keep this forum the friendly place it has become.

Its taken a long time to achieve.
