Yes it sounds like a good idea, but in reality there are always exceptions to the rule - an employee might be somewhere other than they're supposed to be but with nothing untoward going on; like the case of the AA man who was sacked after following a customer part way home past the nearest garage because it was on his way home and not logging out of their fancy computer system until the customer had passed the garage - to the penpusher in the office he had knocked off early (and probably lied to cover it up), but in reality he had gone out of his way to help a customer and was helping to promote a good impression of the company.
When this kind of technology is employed, common sense usually seems to go out of the window, with any explanation being seen as 'excuses'. There can be some pretty offbeat explanations, which to someone who doesn't know the job can sound far-fetched and like a downright lie, while actually lying and saying they knocked off early or took an ad-hoc break might sound more honest and get the employee off more leniently.
Take the number of employees who are sacked for even mentioning their company on facebook - they haven't said or done anything wrong, but the powers that be like to think that they have been clever, and sneakily caught somebody out.

trackers also come under the data protection act, the companies using them need to be very careful what they are doing with the info and who they are showing it to!
Also you will never get a united front, the workforce are quick to bitch and moan about things but never stick together on them! i can understand why but it doesn't get issues sorted!

shame common sense has gone out of fashion. i say employ good lads, trust em to do their job, accept they are gonna do some things they shouldnt and some things they wanna keep secret and let em get on with their job!

Should imagine that the parents of the little girl missing in Wales tonight wish their Daughter was chipped and trackable.
Wouldn't advocate it for adults, but if it helped to stop child abductions, surely it would be worth considering?

Although I agree that in cases of children going missing then chips might be desirable I also believe that there is too much potential for abuse. People say "if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about" if we end up living in a dictatorship or under an authoritarian government then we would have something to worry about, freedoms can be gradually eroded away piece by piece until you suddenly realise that you have none left. Don't forget that there are some people that agree with the principles of dictatorship (particularly those who would end up being in control).

Yep and it goes the other way as well.
Pinch an hour off someone unfairly and it will cost you at least 10 hours work. The lad in question will be on a "go slow" cos he is mightily peed off with the firm, and his workmates will stop work periodically to discuss what has happened.
Treat them with a bit of leniency and common sense and they will put that extra bit in for you to make sure the job pays.
Someone who "wants" to work for you is worth twice as much as someone who "has" to work for you to pay his bills.

I worked for a guy once who was a real tool and he started clock watching and moaning if I was 5 minutes late coming in,anyway he tried having a go one day and ended up loosing.Basically it went from me working so we started at 8 worked till 5 but if say it meant working till 5.45 to finish a job I,d do it but not book overtime,likewise if I turned in at say 8.10 I didn,t expect anything said,however when he started being arsey I would make sure that come 5pm I was no more than 20 minutes from home,and if that meant a 30 minute drive to spend 10 minutes finishing off a job the following morning then so be it.Guess who got bored first.

Yeah they ruled with a rod of iron back then because they could, people are more clued up now though and I think we should not be allowed to be pushed into some sort of gestapo, big brother is watching type scenario on the premise that "If you have nothing to hdie you have nothing to fear"
Successive governments have forced us into it using terrorism or organised crime syndicates as the monster under the bed but at work, as has been pointed out, there has to be some element of trust. I have a tracker on the van, it's a Navman qube 3, apparently one of the most sophisticated trackers available. I wrapped the GPS receiver up in about 5 layers of tin foil, although it hasn't disabled the tracking feature it has made it go all glitchy, got to have it checked on Monday next week so foil will be coming off Sunday. You can buy GPS signal blocker/jammers, plug them in to the smoke lighter and it blocks all GPS devices in a certain radius.

One of the last jobs I had, they gave me a tracking device to fit in the van.
Don't know if they expected me to fit it, left it on the desk at home until I left!?!?
To echo others have said on this thread, this kind of thing is the thin edge of the wedge.
You can't beat a bit of give and take in an Employee/Employer relationship.
You'll get a damn sight more work out of me if I'm given a bit of slack as opposed to being ruled with a rod of iron.

This happened to our vans..the excuse ? Cheaper insurance, it's legal for them to track thier property,phones, vans whatever, what they can't do is then produce this data as a reason to discipline you unless they have complied with the DPA and hold the data securely, and allow you the right to see all data held on you, they would be be shafted in court, can they track you ? yes they can...They can use the Lone Working Regulations to do this, if your on your own you are vulnerable to injury, attack or medical emergency, your employer has a duty of care to protect you, a tracking device will help him to do this, this has been proven in case law and it's here to stay.

We are paid to be employed for a certain amount of hours, not owned 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Surely if you have finished your working day then your time belongs to you, unless you are on call that is.
Are these phones tracked to find your location when you are on call and still being paid by the company?

in one form or another, everybody they can, which is most of the population between the age of about 15 and 60...
Is the tracker on the phone or on the sim? If on the phone then could put the sim in another phone, I think I'd try playing games with them as much as I possibly could if I was in that situation.
Get some lorry driver to take it to spain then DHL it to Iceland where somebody can take it up a mountain and leave it.....that will get them
none of that exists anymore, they binned it, the govt etc go through everything automatically, and the same removal of rights opened the door for big corporations to sift your emails etc for sales and marketing purposes, and to pimp your private things and personal info....
might add that in Japan and other asian countries they have to basically beg for permission to go on holiday.....from their boss, then they are expected to bring in photos to show that their "waste of time" was justified and honourable....thats why they take so many photos of everything.....

"use it or lose it buddy"......can I have a few days? ...NO....even unpaid? ...NO.....but everybody else has had holidays......."look do what you want but if you take days off you get pumped"......can I have my holiday pay at the end of the year then, or have it rolled over until next year then?....NO....Against company policy......so what about my holiday pay...."like I said use it or lose it buddy hahaha".....right I'm off......OK Matey but that's you forefeit your week, your lying time and your Holiday pay..... you plonker, some company this is to work for ....

Yes in the usa thay have a fadds agreement that lots of workers are coerced into agreeing not to smoke or drink even at weekends - it could come here if we don't all grow a pair

already is in a few places, mainly Banks and private medical companies, but will get more so soon I imagine, also its going on at big chains of shops etc that are US owned....
Just like Peasant Insurance (that's what the Banks call it) this is where the company takes out a big life insurance on you and gets it written off against tax as part of the pension fund, but your family never sees it, so if you die at work or at home, they cash it in for a few hundred £$k and that gets factored into their profits....it happens a lot in the USA ..... google "peasant insurance" and you will see what I'm on about...I'm sure it goes on here as well....

Is this not something that a workers union should get involved with? Im assuming that you work for a large company if you have an I.T department. Im against liberties being gently eroded under the "if you have nothing to hide its not a problem" I wouldnt trust a government department, let alone a profit driven private company with sensitive data, at present there are precious little restrictions on how secure the information is kept...
