Hi,

I'm having a problem with my 2011 vivaro campervan, 1995 cc engine. Got the van a couple of years ago, drove nicely except sometimes when going above 70mph "check injection" sign would appear and it'd loose some power, but still drivable. As it was rarely driven at high speeds that was not a priority until I finally got around to fixing it last month.

My mechanic has found an issue with the turbo wiring loom, it had been badly fixed, and when they fixed it, the van started to loose all power at 50mph. Totally limp, had to stop and restart the engine every time.

They have investigated, replaced the turbo boost pressure sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, vacuum pump, vacuum breather hoses, crankshaft position sensor, inspected the turbo (no play or leaks). Then they sent the ECU to be tested and they said that "components have beed deleted, van had DPF and EGR delete".

The only fault code that appears is for Turbo Boost Pressure. At that point the garage gave up and gave me the van back.

I'm desperate for any advice!

Cheers,
Mike

TL;DR
van goes limp at 50mph.
Was your mechanic a Vauxhall service centre?

Bite the bullet and pay to have them go over it.

A general mechanic might not have the correct software for the ECU, and may be creating more faults by connecting a non standard diagnostic machine to it.

What @littlespark says, get it read properly (if you haven't already) with dealer software, even if that's all they do. It should show what the fault is! Have they pressure tested the vac pipes to make sure they are at the correct pressures and have they checked the injectors, as they can cause limp mode and lack of power problems?

flog it and buy a Toyota ( a real one, not a re-badged froggie load of crap)

There's your problem.
My dad had a vauxhall corsa for running about in when he still worked... When he finally gave up, he tried to sell it to "We Buy Any Car"..... just not that particular car...

At around the same time, his main car, another vauxhall, but this time an Astra developed a strange fault that the horn only worked when the full beam lights were on. or something similarly obscure.

Wouldn't drive one if you gave it me for free, they're crap.

Haha.

For me you can't go wrong with Fords. My Mondeo was an amazing car.

My first car was a fiesta mkii… then two Vauxhall novas… which weren’t too bad… but at 18/19 I was just glad to have anything. Had a kuga more recently. I think I’ve tried every make over the years

My old Transit is sitting at the mechanic's with the engine getting rebuilt, was only 85k on the clock and well looked after. In another mechanic's beside his, is my mates transit with the engine getting rebuilt, I think 110k on the clock. Wee builder I work for had to get a new engine in his at 6 months old. Round the corner from me another mates transit hasn't moved in a few months - also needs a new engine, wee joiner I'd work with is on his 3rd clutch on a 5 year old van and not doing big miles...they aren't what they used to be in that it was rust that killed them, they aren't getting anywhere near that long.

Which transit? Funny you say this because a site agent at work was saying the exact same thing to me last week - he said the Transit Custom's engines all 'blow up at 80k miles'.

Not sure you can slate Vauxhall and then try to claim Ford are amazing - there's not much between the two where build quality is concerned.
I definitely can - Vauxhalls are sh**e. In my experience all the Fords i've had (Transit, Transit Courier, Mondeo, Focus, Mondeo Estate) have been amazingly reliable and when something does go wrong they're cheap to fix. The three Vauxhalls i had as a kid were piles of crap - the engines didn't idle smoothly in them, there was always suspension problems and the general build quality and interiors were dreadful.

When i sold my Transit it was up for £3200, the guy tried to offer me £2500 plus his 6 year old Insignia that 'just needed a bit of work'. We settled at £3100 no Insignia. Trying to palm that off on me.

Wouldn't drive one if you gave it me.

not one can hold a candle to a Toyota Hiace. i know i bin on about mine (2004) before, but i bought it for £1500 with 169,000 on the clock. just replaced original clutch at 213,000, cambelt kit same time,( didn't need it but ecu says due). in 7 years it's gone through 7 MOTs, no fails. only other expediture has been oill change, brake pads and a couple of tyres. the bugger will carry me to my grave, then get passed on to my son. and i not going to let clarkson anywhere nere it.

I've had a Vivaro with over 100k on it without problems. I've currently got a 80k+ Transit custom (19 plate) that broke down after 3000 miles (injectors). It's been fine since. Workmate had his injectors go twice. Had 3 Vauxhall cars, Astra GTE, Cavaliar and Vectra. All good cars that served me reasonably well. I don't think any mainstream make is really better than any other. A lot is down to how you treat them.

last vauxhall i had was in 1975, a VX101 estate . nice car except the handbrake never worked.

What's your point? The experiences of one person are irrelevant and could be down to nothing more than luck or ill-informed choices.

I've had a multitude of vehicles from Vauxhall (the majority of which I bought 2-3 years old, at 100k+), with very few issues over the years, but a few real stinkers from Ford. The only difference I can see between our perspectives is that I understand the roll played by luck when buying 2nd hand vehicles - that applies no matter how careful one is in choosing a used vehicle. I'm also able to understand that neither manufacturer designs or builds their vehicles to the highest possible standard and that their popularity is down to price, rather than quality.

I could understand someone signing the praises of Rolls Royce build quality, but trying to convince people that Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen etc are exceptionally reliable is nothing short of laughable. We buy cheap and hope for the best.

Just saw this and wondered why anyone would want to make their van look like a Turkish Dolmus?

Which raises another question... Turkish minibuses are almost exclusively Mercedes Sprinters - do they get a more reliable version of the Sprinter in Turkey? Those things are on the road all day, every day in extreme heat and never seem to miss a beat, yet no one over here has a good word to say about the Sprinter's reliability.

There's also a massive difference between something you drove 20 odd years ago against its more modern equivalent.

"I dont like X make of car because the one and only time i ever drove one, it had a rattle" Therefore, every model of that make must be rattly!

You can also get a new car, that is just a lemon. Every other one, same spec, same age... and there's always one or two that has "something" wrong with it.

I think ive owned just about every make going... or at least drove one.... and i dont think theres any that i would say I'm never having ever again
