Hi all,
Peace campaigner Brian Haw, 62, is reported to have died of cancer - For those of you who don't know who he was. Mr. Haw was the person most responsible for turning Paliament Square into a pikey site; with huge waves of the great unwashed camped out on the square with him.
A bit of hum drum news for most of you I know; but it got me thinking into how long it will be before the conspiracy theories start, and he didn't die of cancer; but was bumped off on the orders of Thatcher?
Personally I'd say that they'll be starting on the internet within three months....

Any Takers???

no doubt the loony left will want to erect a statue of him.

I have nothing but respect for the guy. He spent a decade of his life protesting for what he believed in. Most people are only willing to perhaps post a few messages online or sign a petition. FYI i am not anti war either, i have a friend who's brother was killed over there and still try to believe it was for the greater good. I just respect Brian Haw for having the balls to do something like that for his beliefs. I bet 99% of people wouldn't.

everyone has the right to protest voltz,

agreed. I just wonder at the man who can take the last decade of his life to camp out on parliament square. I only heard about him last year in the paper. Which means he spent 9 years being ignored? Hardly the best way to get your point across.

And was he spectacularly self funded? or was he state supported?

I defend his right to protest, but beg to differ that it was time well spent.

if he was that ignored why did he make the national press/tv/radio on his death,

cos he died. he will probably do better now cos he died on the job. like van gogh.

I don't disrespect the man, or his views, But in my OPINION, he didn't choose the best method for articulating it. I think a lot of people just looked at him sitting there, making a mess of a public space and disregarded his cause because of his methods.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't read the article and suddenly fill up and want to go and sponsor him. I just thought, go home and get a job. A lot of us agree that the war is a muddy, confused issue of mixed motives and we don't and won't emerge the moral or even actual, victors.

he done what he thought was right, gave up his family and home for his beliefs, gota give him credit for that,

are you kidding? he gave up his wife and kids to camp out on the pavement for 10 years in support of a lost cause. The real protests came at the beginning of the conflict around the debate whether or not we should go in. Most sensible people realised that once the decision had been made, and we were committed, that this type of protest was futile.

It brings me back to my original point. Pick your fights, and use better methods. I mean, where do we draw the line at respecting people just because they are passionate about their beliefs?

Do you respect al queda bombers because they have the commitment to islam to blow themselves and others up at the expense of their own, and others' families?

does anyone slate nelson mandela or malcom x for standing up for what they believed in,comparing him to a al queda is a joke, they kill people,he stood up for people being killed..

did they sit around on a pavement hoping for change? or did they use their time and choose their methods to effect their message more effectively?

As stated, I appreciate that the man had passionate world views, but I don't respect his method of articulating them.

I am not comparing him to al queda directly, that would be absurd. I merely make the point in view of your assertion that people should be respected automatically for their dedicated action to a cause. By following this to it's logical conclusion, then you would respect ALL followers of direct action.

I don't respect all followers of direct action and as such I deplore the violent actions of islamic extremists. In Brian's case I also lament the waste of time he dedicated to this cause at the expense of his family.

Please read these words carefully and consider the argument. I value robust debate, and will not decline to the personal level.

If you have a valid and convincing argument, I am more than willing to listen to what you have to say. I may even moderate my own view in light of your observations.

However, if you agree to disagree on this contentious point, then i will be drawn no further and we will leave it at that.

Regards.
