wrighty

ive been made redundant today, for the 2nd time in 2.5 years, i dont have my 17th edition or my 2391. Im looking into options and realise these 2 qualifications are going to be essential for me to either obtain a new job or go flying solo n take on the world ha. Im time served came out of my time in november 2009 so im wondering where to start with these courses. im abit reluctant to fork out for the 2391 straight away just with the pass rate etc n my own confidence. although the 17th i know you used to be able to do exam only dont think thats possible any more, So for those of you in the know where do i start with the 17th. what course do i need to sit or am i able to sit? im looking for the cheapest shortest route but abit unsure with this?

Rather than take time off work, I got a home study CD rom (£60) from Down Under Tradies, and am going there on Thursday to do the exam (£180). Seems expensive but for not having to take time off work to study it's saved me hundreds. The CD rom has actually been quite good as a refresher but equally if the student is newish it guides you quite well through the regs. You are supposed to have had a certain amount of "led study" before sitting the exam.

Cheapest or shortest? Which?
The cheapest is the buy the BGB and teach yourself to find things in it. With apologies to the experts who already know - the 2382 is NOT an exam about how much of the book you remember. It's an exam about being able to find the regulations in the book, which you have open in front of you.
You can buy software from ElectaCourse which will simulate the exam. It's not very good but once you're gone through it a hundred times you will be pretty confident at looking things up.

Shortest? A short course from a commercial training place. A few days and a few hundred pounds. Job done.

I think it's around £35 but you also need the green book.

Further education colleges will not let you take the exam with them unless you have been enrolled on their course. Any commercial training outfit will let you take the test alone. I paid £120 (IIRC).

Buy a CD will not teach you how to stick post-it notes in the specific part of the regs. It won't show you which points are worth highlighting so it is easy to find in exam conditions, it won't out of the blue ask you something to look up. The commercial course I took did all of that.

There were 3 of us on it one guy who was from a fire alarm background ( his boss wanted him to test em lighting) another guy who had never worked on the tools (another textbook electrician who had never been on site) and me with over 25 years in the industry with minimal domestic experience, as I'm from a commercial installation background)
After 4 days we all passed.

Good luck with you CD......

Just to clarify for the newcomers;
You sit the 2382 exam with a copy of 7671 open in front of you but that has to be a "clean" copy. No post-its, no highlighter, clean.
I'm sure SupaSpaxs wasn't intending to mislead but just so nobody gets caught out.
