    Well I'm not investing in that kind of tester. What can I do to confirm the condition of the cable. I'm still confused by the term "capability" it's not the sort of terminology I'd expect when referring to the condition of a cable. That would be more like integrity or condition etc.... Sorry...

    At the moment the detectors will just be fed from a dedicated circuit. To get to my consumer unit you need to move a shoe cabinet which isnt the easiest. The only way I can see aboit preventing turning the smokes off in the event of a fault is to utilise the lighting circuit like mentioned above.

    Is there no way 1 data outlet could be converted into 2 or 3 outlet via a connector? I'm just concerned running 2 or 3 cables to each point on the off chance of using them. I'm defo running 1 to each point but not sure the extra is necessary

    Ok so cat 5 is the way forward. So are we saying its advisable to run 2 cables to each point? I'm going to house a switch somewhere and route a cables there to enable more options

    Capability of the cabling? The capability of the cabling should be within the spec?? Testing the cabling to ensure damage free correct termination can be confirmed by a proper tester. Although, they usually have flashing lights.

    Just about to start pulling in the cables for my smile detectors, however I dint have the detectors yet. Is there enough room in the terminals to terminate a supply feed in and then loop out to the next detector or is a junction box required to house the feed and a supply taken from every J/B?

    How odd, taking into account the theory behind rcds, any neutral to earth should operate the device. I cant imagine any condition where the rcd would not see an imbalance when neutral and earth are shorted in some way.... I think by process of elimination I will still try what you have...

    I'll be honest, I dont get that. Iv had rcds that wont hold in because there is a neutral to earth short. What neutral to earth characteristics would denote an rcd tripping and an rcd not operating at all? Earthing arrangement? Extent of short circuit?

    No its protecting only part of the installation. A split load board. If there was a N-E fault then the rcd should do its job. If it's not tripping then the rccb is still faulty. There was a good Zs reading on the circuit and no odd voltages across N-E. That's how I understand it...
