Looked at a job today where the elderly occupants have the old rewirable fusebox tucked away high in a kitchen cupboard where neither of them can reach, or replace the fiddly fuse wire.
They've asked me to price up replacing the CU with a split RCD unit but would also like it lowering so they...

I sometimes get some work helping a fellow sparky. Last week he asked me to help him on wiring a loft conversion. He is the one responsible for the cert (design, install and testing). I was just the hired help.
He said we are going to take a spur from the ring to a 13A FCU for the sockets and a...
Hello all, just a little help required to settle an argument I've been having for the last two days...firstly I'll say that I'm not fully qualified yet...sitting my am2 next week (why I mention this will become clear later).
The other day I was removing some old light fittings and found that a...
Is it acceptable to leave a 2 core 10mm2 MICC cable supplying an upstairs flat on a 100A suppliers fuse? (Maxing demand is acceptable and disconnection times are within tolerance.)
Is is acceptable to run YY cable through box sections (square or rectangular tubing) that form the structure of a machine tool? This is for power and control, all 48VDC or less.
Would it be good practice to route the cables through flexible non metallic conduit where it penetrates or passes...
Ok....I'm clearly in a minority on this. So to all the guys on here who install small scale TT systems some questions.
What value of Ra do you accept? What values of Ra do you aim for? How far do you go to achieve those values? If you cant achieve your desired value (ie values comparable to a TN...
does anyone know why/how a PIR done by a 2391 spark (not part of a scheme) is acceptable to LABC and yet an installation cert done by the same spark(for notifiable work) needs to be backed up by membership to a scheme ? I understand that some work is notifiable , would it be acceptable to supply...

Hi Guys,
Just a quick one, on a power rewire is it acceptable to wire new cables under floor and join onto old legs of circuit but only from socket to underfloor. So only about a foot of existing cable left in to stop damage to walls.
Thanks
Hi there,
Im a qualified electrician but don't do much domestic.
A friend of mine would like a fused spur installed so he can connect an extract fan above his cooker.
The nearest socket is quite a distance so would it be acceptable to install a switched fused spur next to the cooker point...
Gents, perhaps you can throw some 'light' on some situations that have arisen and offer your experiences of this situation.
I am dealing with a most perdantic building controller here in the South who has insisted on the follwoing:-

When testing your meter with "Resistance Check Box", if you get 1.99 instead of 2 ohms, you know the reading is within the range. But what exactly is the acceptable tolerance in these cases? Is it 99%? Thanks!
Ok, without wanting to cause too much controversy, when is it acceptable to use method 2 for insulation resistance testing? The term 'when it is unpracticable' is lame IMO and invites lazy testers to forgo a lot of work that would otherwise be necessary. I have, however used it myself!! Would be...
