I use the knipex electricians knife and sharpen it with an oil stone every couple of weeks. I love it. The only recommendation is to keep the cap safe as once it's lost it's lost. I keep my lid on a string on my pouch and put it back on when the knife goes back. £11 odd at electrafix at the moment

I use a folding utility knife mostly, it has stanley knife blades so you just change them when they get blunt.
I do like the hultafors electricians knife (ELK) but it does get blunt too quickly.
However the choice of knife does depend on what you need to do with it.
I do have a ceramic knife (not VDE rated) just in case I might be cutting into a live cable!

It's small, so easy to use in confined backboxes, enclosures, etc. A fresh sharp edge whenever you need it. The blade locks in tight, so it's as solid as a fixed blade.
Not for heavy duty work, but I've used one for years.

Yes, used to have one clipped to my belt for a number of years. I found myself having to sharpen it fairly often, still much prefer using a stanley knife for making off SWA.
I got one recently ish. Used it for the first few weeks but gone back to the Stanley knife know. Can't beat a new Stanley blade when you need one. Won't be buying any kind of electricians knife again personally, though I am sure they have there uses.
Oooh you brute Pete! One thing it does seem to me is sturdy. Your comment has put me off using it again, really don't want a sharp (ish) knife breaking when I am pressing down on it. Sounds like a potential recipe for disaster!
I use a wooden handled folding stanley these days. Have to say I really do like the vde knipex ones except blade life is not great.

I use a retractable Draper knife which was supplied FOC on a job I was working on. It uses standard Stanley type blades so there's no problem getting replacement blades; one thing I will say is there seems to be some variation in quality between manufacturers - some (I assume the cheaper ones) such as DeWalt don't seem to last long, which is fine if they're being supplied but if you're paying for them they can be a false economy.
If you're doing a lot of site work some sites can be particular about the type of knife you use - some only want you to have an automatically retracting blade.

Sorry, I cannot find the knife on the web, nor on the CK site. I have just thought that this may be a sample that was sent to me just before they are on general sale. I am sure they will be on the shelves soon, so if you can hang on a bit I am sure you won't be disappointed. I will do a bit more research by contacting CK, in the meantime for you.

The folding Stanley blade holders are ideal,cheap,and easily loaded. I always have a DMT diamond hone about,so even these "throw-away" blades,can be easily dressed up,and increased use obtained.
I would not use a knife for SWA,as it nicks the wire coating,just where Mr.corrosion likes to start,preferring a Thomas Betts peripheral cutter. That's just a personal thing...
I have two Spyderco legal-carry drop leaf pen-knifes,one orange,for work attire,and a black one for other times.
I have a lovely Buck folder,ATS-34 steel,shimmed bearing,leather belt holster...but it got an issue with "entitlement",as it locks,so it only gets occasional outings.
I would not be without a knife,if at all possible,which after all the bad press,is merely a "tool".
Knives are not dangerous. That adjective is reserved for people.
Nobody calls spoons,dangerous,when folk start to get fat...

i used a swiss army type knife for some swa etc but being able to swap blades is more convinient. i sharpen mine on a dmt then a waterstone which is overkill for a knife.
a dmt is a lot better than a waterstone/oil stone as they are diamon lapping plates (steel bars with industrial diamonds on the surface)

I can't believe so many of you use Stanley knives for stripping cables. I was always taught, Both at work and college, that Stanleys are too sharp and make damaging the conductor more likely, I had a thorsman knife for ages, Sharp enough to get through the PVC, But not Copper, Fingers, Plasterboard etc....
Mind, That could've just bee Hull College's excuse for supplying us with Knives that you could ride bare 'bottom' to London on.

your more likely to cut yourself with a dull knife as you slip more often.
anyway i like to keep a razor edge on my knifes, i can shave with some of mine (ive got straigh razors and the hones to sharpen them)

I have a knipex knife for all things i probably shouldn't be doing and stripping outers off pyro, then a stanley fatmax for day to day.
