Hey new to this so please bare with me. I completed a city and guilds level 3 electricians course and had been practising for over a year before the urge to travel took me to the far east for 6months! Whilst out there I spoke to a guy who is a PTS lecy and have thought about taking it up. I am due to start my PTS course monday but am worried if it's really the right step? Any advice? Although I am qualified on paper there is alot I still need to learn. Is this a well paid career? Would OLEC be a better route? Are the hours long? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Many Thanks!

I'm assuming PTS is personal trackside safety??? As for OLEC, I suspect on some sites you may well need both.

I have no personal experience, but living near a rail line on more than one occasion I can pretty much guarantee the hours are likely to include a significant portion of unsociable night working. Hardly ever see crews on the track during the day.

Medical research suggests extended night working isn't good for your health in the longer term. Side effects include, I believe, a significant increase in the risk of developing heart problems.

I suspect the money is good, but the working conditions are likely to be grim in terms of having to work in bad weather and such like. Not much choice when everything is on the clock because the line has to reopen for the daily commute.

Just a few thoughts which are not based on personal experience. Hopefully someone will pop up who has been there.

Welcome to the forums BTW :D

Welcome no info on your question sorry, SC's advice is good wait until there are more folk logged on.
