Have to laugh at the OP. For the first year and a half of my apprenticeship, I travelled 35 miles (each way) to the office almost every day (depending on where we were working), in my own car at my own expense!

Who is he doing his apprenticeship through? JTL? Perhaps have a quick word with his mentor at JTL or other training body. See what they have to say and get them to have a word if needs be.

Just have a calm and reasonable chat with the guy, explain that you are only currently picking him up out of generosity and that you could reasonably expect him to make his own way to your business address every day of the week!

There's no need to go having a tantrum or telling tales to his training provider, that's just making a mountain out of a molehill. He will then feel even less inclined to do any work!

I wasn't suggesting telling takes to anyone. I was suggesting asking the training provider what his opinion was. That doesn't necessarily constitute as telling tales.

No way, he is the employer not JTL. He sets the rules not JTL. He dishes out the pats on the back or the kicks up the arse not JTL.

Hi All

Just a quickie.... want to see what others think and if I'm being unreasonable?

I pick up and drop off my apprentice from his home address on a daily basis. He lives 5 mins drive down the road so no problem really.

He recently started driving and have asked on a Monday each week if he could make his own way to the lock up (5 mins drive from his house/ parking fine) to get the van loaded up ready for the week. And I'll meet him there, simples really.

The response I got was..... "I'm not using my car for work"

Wasnt best please with that, and made it quite clear what I thought.

Any thoughts please ?

Cheers Sy
Well I suggest you inform him that his place of work is the lock up, and you expect him to be there for 8 in the morning everyday, if he is late more than twice issue him with a verbal warning, another 2-3 times and a written warning, that will sort him out lol

Maybe two buses a day between where I live and it stops about 5 miles short of the office, no trains either. I'll be ****ed if I would even attempt to cycle that route once in my life! So yes I took the car, wasn't as successful in the hail this one time right enough.
