Hello,

could someone please tell me whether armature winders test the motors etc they wind or is the job merely involved with winding the coils.Im trying to establish whether they actually come into contact with electricity in the course of their job.

Regards

Ron

Hi
Yes we do test motor we rewind, we come into contact with electricity single phase, three phase & dc . I served my time with electrical engineering firm as a winder did everything from going on site to fault find motors and controlgear, rewinding motors (a lot of theory reqired here) ac & dc also wound soleniod coils, transformers, alternators (not automotive). It was one of the best all round trainings you could get. I went on to do my c&g upto 2391 and never been out of work in 28 year

ps never rewired a house but designed and wired lots of plc controlled industrial plants from feed mill to recycling shredders typical size 150hp + .

Thanks alot for the reply.Could you please explain what you mean by single phase, three phase and dc in regards to your contact with electricity?

Secondly,is an armature winder an electrician who has chosen to specialise in rewinding motors etc

Regards

Ron

The place i worked in for 20 years had a seperate part of the company which specialised in motor rewinding etc ,(i was in the electrical contracting part )most of the guys who worked there had served their time as winders but with the type of work we did we would sometimes both be on the same job at the same time , when i was doing my time i worked in the workshop for a few months when we were short of work on the contracting side and it was good experience to pick up regarding motors, panels, starters etc,. The company i now work for do no rewinding , panel building etc and most of the guys i work with have never actually connected up a 3 phase motor or direct on line starters etc , so i feel its something i can look back on and think , yeah at least i learned something .

Thanks for the reply.

Is it correct to think that armature winders would have firstly trained as an electrician and then gone on to specialise in armature winding? Also, could armature winders run the risk of electrocution whilst rewinding motors etc?

cheers

Ron
