Hi all , with regards to the above , is it only inside buildings that would be rated as zone 1 ? Ie a vat situated outside in fresh air that holds pure alcohol which fumes are vented to atmosphere , would this come under a zone 1 rating or not ?

A Vat . . . . Pure alcohol . . . . Outside. . . That should get a few members ears pricking up!
id Say that COSSH refers more than electrical installations.

An outdoor area can certainly be classed as a zone 1 area. You might find the area within 5ft of any door or exhaust connected to the vat is zone1, then 5ft from this is considered zone 2. You really need a hazardous area map for the site.

I would be checking the sites Zone Classification drawing. This should be in place and will detail any Zone extents. Radius may be smaller due to the fact there is natural ventilation.

Zone 1 is gas likely to occur during normal operation but not more than 1000 hours per year. This could be venting etc. Zone 0 is gas present during normal ops >1000 hours per year.

If I remember rightly I've seen haz area drawings with zone 2's going upto 10m radius and 6m high
